Dear Parents and Carers,
This weekend, our Year 4 students, who received their First Holy Communion last weekend, will gather after Mass to receive their certificates and enjoy some cake together. Thank you again to the families, Father Thai, Magdalene our Parish Sacramental Coordinator and the Year 4 staff who have prepared the students for this very important moment in their faith journey.
We are sadly saying goodbye to Father Anthony this weekend. Father Anthony has served the Orana community for the last two years. He leaves a legacy of being a gentle, kind and child focused priest. He will be sadly missed.
Next Friday 2nd July is Orana Day. On this day we will have a Mass to celebrate the Feast of Saints John and Paul. During this special celebration, we will be blessing a memorial for Di McKay, that will be added to our Harmony Garden. A blessing will also be extended to our staff members, Nadia Lovell, Denise Moutett and Deb Keily, who have had family members pass away this year. Father Anthony will be celebrating this Mass, which will be his last Mass at Orana and also his farewell. Parents and Carers are welcome to attend.
After Mass on Orana Day, the students will participate in a Mini Fair to raise money for LifeLink. Classes are planning various stalls. I have seen some of the plans for the Mini Fair activities which will certainly be engaging and fun. Please send in a donation. There will also be a Year 6 / Staff Volleyball Match at lunchtime.
Congratulations to the students who represented our school at the Interschool Cross Country Carnival last Friday. Many committed to training leading up to the event and it was great to hear of the great sportspersonship and effort demonstrated on the day. Thank you to staff and parents who attended.
Student reports will be available on SEQTA from next Monday. The report is a summary of your child’s achievement against the curriculum that was taught in Semester One. Each learning area has a list of descriptors to clearly show the curriculum content that has been assessed. These clear and succinct learning area descriptors replace the traditional subject area comments.
The report will help you have a conversation with your child in regard to their progress, effort, responsibility and attitude towards learning. It will help you celebrate successes and to also determine some areas of focus for Semester Two. It is important that students own their efforts and achievements and that as adults in our children’s lives, we ensure that they understand and appreciate they are the most influential person, with family and school support, in determining the results they achieve.
As we come to the end of Term 2, students are asked to finish the term to the same high standards that have been demonstrated so far. Please talk to your child about how their positive behaviour and efforts portray a positive image of themselves, their families and their school. Our students are required to promote our school values “Generosity, Respect and Excellence” and also our school motto, “To Give is To Receive” by being positive role models for others.
Wearing the winter uniform correctly and with pride is an expectation. Thank-you to the parents that support the school in this expectation. Faith In Action
Orana Day – the Feast of Saints John and Paul
On the last day of term, 2nd July, we will celebrate Orana Day. This day acknowledges our Parish connection of Saints John and Paul and the history we share of Orana Catholic Primary School.
This year, we will celebrate Mass at 9.30am in the hall. During this Mass, we pray for our school community including the very special members who have been affected by events this year. Father Anthony will pray a blessing on us, the community of Orana Catholic Primary School. Parents are most welcome to come and celebrate Mass with us.
Following this, our classes have coordinated a Mini-Fair that will be held around the school from 11.30am to lunch time. Each class will hold a stall. Families are asked to make a donation on that day. The money raised will go towards LifeLink. See attached link: https://lifelink.com.au stalls during the mini-fair do not require any payment other than an initial donation at the beginning of the day.
Our Graduation Committee will also be holding a lunch day. They will be selling sushi and pizza. See below for details regarding this in the P & F News section. This will be followed by a volleyball match between staff and our Year 6 Leaders. There is lots to look forward to!
Parent Homeless Food Roster - Thank you!
Many, many hot meals and what a variety we had!
A very big thank you to all our lovely Orana Parents and Grandparents who cooked and supplied food for the homeless on Tuesday.
Many of these parents have contributed again and again and we are very happy to see some new people as well.
A huge thank you to Paola for pulling it all together for Orana every time and for Nicole Shortland joining Paola to go and serve the food.

Social Justice Group
Plant Sale - This Week!
Wow! What a celebration of team work and identifying a need to fix! Our wonderful team of students have raised over $800. This money will be used to create meals for our homeless.
Nights are getting Colder
As we are all aware, the nights are getting very cold. The Social Justice Group would like to help those who are in need by collecting warm blankets, beanies, gloves and socks. If you have any of the above items that are spare and you no longer need them, you can drop them off in the 4W classroom and we will give them to the Homelessness We Care organisers. We ask that they be in reasonable condition and clean. We thank everyone for your support with this project.
P & F News
We are happy to announce that we have been successful in our grant application for a St John Ambulance defibrillator equipment. This will be installed at a publicly accessible location where it can benefit our community. I would like to personally thank Cory O’Kane, Amanda Walker, Deborah Goodwin, and Dee Johnston for their effort with this grant.
We are still looking for volunteers to help to be a part of the Disco Committee, which we have planned to take place in early September, 2021. So, if you are keen to get involved or wanting to know more, please reach out to myself, the P&F Execs, or e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Discussions are also ongoing on the automatic gate project and the pick up shelter for the pick-up/drop off area at the back of the school. We have obtained a number of quotes, and will be discussing at the next P & F meeting, which is scheduled on Tuesday, 10th August 2021 at 6.30pm, at the school library.
We have been busy planning our Parent & Children Camping Activity, and we’re happy to announce the event will be held on 14-15 August 2021 – please join us for an overnight camping adventure. There will be optional activities such as wall climbing, disc golf, indoor movie, bush walking, and basketball to participate in, and of course there will be a camp fire!
As this is an off-site activity, you will be responsible for your own children’s supervision throughout the event. For further details please click on the link for the flyer.

Well done to all students in Years 3-6 who were selected to compete at the CAPSS Cross Country Carnival for 2021. The students headed to Manning Park to compete in a 1.5km and 2km cross country race. The students were wonderful sports people, cheering their school and competitors on. A special thank you to all the students, parents and staff that assisted with the organisation and running of the day. Orana did exceptionally well with three of our students receiving individual medals. A huge congratulations to Nikita and Evan in Year 5 and Joel in Year 6 for coming in 2nd place. Well done to our Year 4 boys’ team who received a certificate each for the most points earned in their event. Overall, Orana placed in 5th place with a total of 385 points.

This year the school will be a venue for ICAS Testing. ICAS testing is separate to the standardised assessments undertaken here. We understand some parents would like their children to participate in Writing, Digital Technology, English, Science, Spelling Bee and Mathematics testing. The school will offer the testing venue, setting up of iPads and supervision of tests. A direct payment plan to ICAS will be set up once we receive expressions of interest.
