Conditioning
Operant Conditioning: (Conscious) "We learn to behave in certain ways as we operate on the environment" (Pg. 256).

Classical Conditioning
This relates to humans as well. Known as a basic behavioral or emotional response to a certain event or stimulus, the video linked below shows a perfect example of this. The video depicts a scene where a man is at the doctor's and the nurse is about to put in a shot. Right before that, she says, "Don't worry, this won't hurt a bit", and then proceeds to deliver the painful shot. Now, a couple days later, the man goes to the dentist, and the dentist uses the same phrase. Though the dentist has not even done anything yet, the man feels a natural response to flee as the stimulus of that phrase brings on the feeling of fear and pain.
Operant Conditioning
Positive Reinforcement:
As shown in my previous example, positive reinforcement is the giving of a reward in response to a desired behavior, so that the individual learns to continue out that behavior in response to the environment. Though for younger children this may only need to be a sticker, older children may need homework passes, or other things that will compensate for the continued behavior.
Negative Reinforcement:
This is similar to a reward system, however the reinforcement in itself comes from taking away something from the environment in order cause that behavior to start up again. An example as discussed in class would be an individual not having to do the dishes in return for completing their homework on time. Because they did their homework, the parent takes away the chore of having to do dishes.
