Black History Month

As a school, we have focused on creating a safe and inclusive space for our students. Part of this has been done by teaching lessons to our students on identity, examining our communities, and celebrating the diversity of our students. While it is our intention to interweave the cultures and lives of our students throughout the year, we have the opportunity to give more space this month to the Black voices in our country.

For the month of March, the school will be focusing on the character trait of integrity. Integrity is all about being honest and doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do - even when it is hard and no one is watching. It involves treating people equally and taking responsibility for your own action and emotions. We shape a child’s integrity by treating them with respect and dignity, and listening to their feelings and concerns without judgment.

Want some ideas for encouraging integrity in your home? Here are a few ideas from Roots of Action.

  1. Articulate family values
  2. Develop a moral vocabulary

  3. Reward respectful behavior

  4. Explore consequences

  5. Respond appropriately, with consistency

  6. Role Model Integrity

  7. Teach digital etiquette

  8. Share meaningful stories

  9. Instill self-efficacy

Some books I love using to teach integrity are "Say Something" by Peter H. Reynolds, which encourages kids to use their voice to do good in the world, "If Everybody Did" by Jo Ann Stover, which shows how our choices can affect one another, and "I Am Human" by Susan Verde which helps instill empathy for yourself and others. If you want to listen to those with you kids, check out the links below.

Below is a link to many resources which have been provided by the Gresham-Barlow School District. There is information regarding meal distribution, housing help, mental health resources, and childcare assistance.

Please reach out if you are in need of anything and I can help you to navigate the resources available to us and find the supports you need during these times. You can also fill out our Resource Request Form and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
