Her legacy and Her Death
Martha's youngest daughter Ellen had married William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., son and name of the abolitionist leader. In December 1874, Martha traveled to Boston to help the Garrisons at the birth of her 14th grandchild, William Lloyd Garrison, the 3rd. Martha became ill there with typhoid pneumonia, and died in Boston on January 4, 1875, at the age of sixty-eight.
Martha was smart and extremely helpful in the chain of events that took place in her lifetime. Martha had some surprising achievements for a women who's formal education ended at the age 15, has been preserved in the archives of Smith College and Syracuse University, and used by historians studying reform movements and middle-class family life in 19th-century America.
