CDS Middle School
November 30th, 2018
From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
The holiday spirit is alive and well at CDS Middle School! Our Student Council has been very active over the past few weeks with their Christmas door decorating competition, and more importantly their Fill the Sleigh drive to support children at the Happy Home orphanage in Incheon. It's wonderful to see students working together to make a difference in the world.
As Term 2 winds down, students have been busy wrapping up project work and preparing for their upcoming final exams (December 10th, 11th, and 12th). Students can find the exam schedule posted outside the MS Office on Monday 12/3.
We have much to look forward to in the coming weeks including the G7 Music & Social Justice performance, the G7 SDL TEDx presentations, MS/HS Winter Concert, Candle Lighting Ceremony, and the long winter break.
Have a great weekend!

Student Council - Fill the Sleigh
The Middle School Student Council is continuing to collect donations for Fill the Sleigh. Fill the Sleigh is an event where students bring in items to fill up boxes that the Student Council will donate to a local orphanage in Incheon called Happy Home, and the winning team will get 100 Dalton Cup points. So far, we’ve collected 34 items! We recommend that students donate laundry detergent, but toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, conditioner, chips, and other snacks would also be appreciated. So far, we've had at least two people donate items every day! This is a really good cause to donate for, especially because the many kids at Happy Home aren't readopted, so please bring in donation items for Happy Home!

7th Grade Music Performance
Dear 7th Grade Parents,
In Music class during Term 2, the 7th graders have been learning about social justice. Social Justice is taking action and raising awareness about a social problem. We have been collaborating as a class to teach people about the seriousness of suicide. Korea has one of the highest suicide in the world, so we are trying to raise awareness about the issue through this performance.
We would like to invite you to our Music Social Justice Performance. The performance will be on Wednesday, December 5 at 3:00 p.m in the Small Theater.
Also, we will collect donations for Korean Suicide Prevention Center. If Korean Suicide Prevention Center get a donation they can help more people who are vulnerable to committing suicide.
We hope you to see there!
Parent Information Session #3 - NWEA MAP Testing
Thursday, Dec. 6th, 3-4pm
CDS Middle School Conference Rm
NWEA MAP Testing:
- Why does CDS use NWEA MAP? How is MAP different from other standardized tests? How do I interpret my child's MAP scores? What is a RIT score? How can I know if my child is on track to be college and career ready? How does my child's score compare with other students in East Asia? How do teachers use students' scores to guide their instruction? How can I have productive conversations with my child about their MAP scores?

G5 Art Project with Mrs. Koetje
This week the 5th graders have been focusing on various ways to communicate an emotion or message through artworks. They were given the opportunity to reflect on Abstract Expressionist works to understand how visual qualities can affect the mood in an artwork. Students used their knowledge about the seven Elements of Art to interpret the mood or message within a variety of artworks.
The 5th graders project was tightly connected to their English lessons about author and illustrator Jim Kay, whom creates specific moods in his writing and his artwork. Students could recognize how the types of lines, shapes, colors and forms Jim Kay used influenced the type of mood he wanted the reader or viewer to experience.
During English students chose a scene from Jim Kay's book, "A Monster Calls", to illustrate using various found objects and tools. After trying out different techniques and various materials the 5th graders were able to decide which technique or material would produce the textures and lines necessary to recreate the scene's mood. Students did a fantastic job exploring the different lines and textures random objects can produce while also being attentive to the visual qualities of their creations.

Chinese with Mrs. Liu
For term 2, students in Chinese advanced level needed to choose one of the famous mythologies and creatively made a story book to introduce the story selected and its significance. Then each student needed to present their work to their group members. When a student was giving the presentation, the group members were taking notes and making questions related to that presentation.
Through this project students explored more Chinese culture and they were impressed with these beautiful stories and the spirit embedded in the stories. Chinese advanced level students did a great job and I am so proud of them.
