Kentucky Derby Field Almost Set

Field of 20 just about Set for Churchill

The new Kentucky Derby qualifying system has been a success, at least in the opinion of this horse fan. The derby trials have been more exciting than ever and the ability to follow along with the point system has added drama to the place and show finishers in the last couple of weeks. But with the trial season coming to an end, we just about have the field of 20 horses set and ready to make the trip to Churchill Downs for the May 4th running of the Kentucky Derby.

There are still a few points up for grabs the next two weekends with the Coolmore/Lexington Stakes at Keeneland on April 20th and the Derby Trail on April 27th at Churchill Downs. However, those races are only worth 20 points to the winner, 8 for second, 4 points to the third place finisher and 2 points to the fourth place finisher.

As of 04/18 the current standing look like this:

  1. Orb (150)
  2. Verrazano (150pts)
  3. Goldencents (129)
  4. Java's War (122)
  5. Overanalyze (110)
  6. Revolutionary (110)
  7. Lines of Battle (100)
  8. Vyjack (70)
  9. Will Take Charge (60)
  10. Itsmyluckyday (50)
  11. Govenor Charlie (50)
  12. Black Onyx (50)
  13. Palace Malice (50)
  14. Normandy Invasion (44)
  15. Frac Daddy (44)
  16. Mylute (42)
  17. Oxbow (36)
  18. Super Ninety Nine (30)
  19. Falling Sky (30)
  20. Charming Kitten (20)
  21. Code West (20)
  22. West Hills Giant (20)
  23. Tiz a Minister (20)
  24. Carve (20)
  25. Golden Soul (14)

The dance of the jockeys has already started as connections are starting to announce riders over the last couple of days.

Who you got? I have to admit, the addition of Calvin Borel to the connections around Revolutionary made one of my favorites even more desirable.
