Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!
December 1, 2024
From the desk of: Principal Hoese
As the colder weather arrives, I wanted to provide you all with the guidelines that we follow. If the wind chill is 9 degrees or lower, students will be inside (gymnasium if before school, indoor recess if later in the day).
Additionally, we've noticed many students were not properly equipped with winter apparel this week. Please make sure to send your child(ren) with coats, snow boots, snow pants, hats, and gloves.
If your family needs help in supplying any of the following items, please send Lisa Outzen (school CNA) an email at loutzen@riverbendschools.net - we have numerous donations to provide:
- Snow boots
- Hats
- Gloves
- Some snow pants
- Some winter coats
If you have any of these items you would like to donate, please bring them to the FES office!
As always, if your family is in need of any support, please reach out to us and inquire. We have numerous programs, organizations, and families who are willing to help our #SteamerNation community. We are likely be able to connect a family in need with the needed support.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Finding time to take care of your own needs can be a challenge for busy parents and caregivers, especially around the holidays. Self-care is key for maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health. Here are a few simple activities to try if you have a few minutes:
1. Enjoy a moment of music. Put on your favorite song!
2. Hydrate to feel great. Take a break and have a glass of cold water. Getting enough water daily helps our brains and bodies stay healthy. It’ll help you feel energized and ready to take on whatever comes next.
3. Pause and praise yourself. Take a moment and think about something that went well recently. What was it? How did it make you feel? Noticing and celebrating small victories helps us to thrive.
4. Take a breath break. Pausing to stretch and breathe can clear your mind. Inhale a big breath and shrug your shoulders. Exhale and let your shoulders fall. Try again, this time reaching up with your arms as you inhale and letting them fall as you exhale. Try it a few more times.
5. Send a terrific text. Sending kind words or just sharing them with someone you care about is good for you, too! Giving compliments helps us to notice and appreciate the good things that are happening all around us.

Preschool Theme: Tasty Traditions
We are trimming the trees and learning about family traditions throughout the holidays!
Our preschool elf showed up today, and each of the classes voted on a name for her.
Holiday Support for Families Needed
We are currently looking for 4 additional families to provide holiday support for Lil Steamer families in need this holiday season. By doing so you would purchase holiday gifts for Lil Steamer children, wrap them, and then they would be anonymously given to families in need.
If you or your family would be interested in helping, please email Principal Hoese at jhoese@riverbendschools.net and he will follow up with the details. All family information is kept anonymous.
5th Grade Math
This week fifth grade students started learning about decimals. We have learned how to say their number name and how to round decimals to the nearest tenth and hundredth. Students have also practiced adding and subtracting with decimals. The pictures below show students using base ten blocks to practice place value with decimals.
Each month students complete a Calendar Collector activity for our Number Corner time. For December, we collected data about our heights and foot length and will be using it to make line plots. Students will then learn how to use the line plots to analyze data.
