Journey To Antarctica
By Alana
Hi and welcome to my flyer about Antarctica
To get you started, I thought I'd share a joke.
How cold is it in Antarctica?
It's so cold you have to climb into the freezer with the ice-cream to get warm.......
FACTS ABOUT SEALS
Did you know that male elephant seals are the biggest of Antarctica's seals?
A male seal can weigh up to 4 tonnes. That's as heavy as about 47 men.
Fur seals don't have thick layers of fat like other seals. Instead, a thick fur coat helps keep them warm. Antarctica's seals spend most of their life in the ocean.
SNOW PETREL
Did you know the snow petrel is known to nest in the Rocky Mountains of Antarctica?
THE WANDERING ALBATROSS
Did you know the Wandering Albatross has the longest wing span? The wing span measures 3 metres.
Polar bears are know to be very big in Antarctica.
Iceberg
Icebergs are pieces of ice that float in the oceans of Antarctica. Icebergs come in all shapes and sizes. Icebergs are dangerous for ships because icebergs are hard to spot.
Aurora Australis
So far the best place to see the Aurora Austarlis is in Antarctica.
Baby Seals
Baby seals are born with white fur that helps them to blend in with the snow.
CAPTAIN ROBERT SCOTT
CAPTAIN ROBERT SCOTT
(1868-1912)
Did you know that Robert Scott was the third of six children in the English family. At the age of 13 he joined the British Royal Navy.He got chosen to lead the 1901 discovery expedition to Antarctica. The ship he travelled in was called the Discovery.
Penguins
The female emperor penguin lays a single egg on the ice. The males roll it onto their feet and under a skin fold. There are all different kinds of Penguins.
ADELIE PENGUINS
Adelie penguins are the smallest of the Antarctica Penguins. Adelie penguins build their nest of stones on the rocky beaches of Antarctica. There are over 2.5 million breeding pairs living in Antarctica.
This is a hump-back whale.
