From Mrs. Barry:
As you know, this week MWE had our first active COVID cases. We've also seen an uptick of cases in our immediate community. With this have come many questions and concerns. I'd like to reassure you that we continue to diligently follow the LearnSBISD health and safety plan and protocols (https://www.springbranchisd.com/learn-sbisd). We continue to be vigilant about mask wearing, hand washing, disinfecting and social distancing. We ask that you continue to do the same, and we thank you for the extreme caution you are using as your children show possible symptoms or had potential exposure.
If you or your child has been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID, we ask that you follow the following guidelines. First and foremost, call or email Ms. Vendetti (jaime.vendetti@springbranchisd.com), Nurse Nicole (nicole.gruenberger@springbranchisd.com) and me (lynne.barry@springbranchisd.com). As each situation is different, Nurse Nicole will call you and walk you through next steps. Depending upon information including who was exposed and when, she will recommend whether or not your children need to stay home, for how long, what test is recommended and when. The decisions are very dependent on specific scenario information - one size does NOT fit all! Please note that an immediate, rapid test is not always what is needed by the school, so please allow Nurse Nicole to talk through your situation with you. Generally, 72 hours since last exposure is the minimal time for a test, but other situations impact these guidelines and district expectations.
If your child stays home for COVID-related reasons, we can still continue with their education. There is no need for you to separately contact your child's teacher - Ms. Vendetti and I handle this when we receive your initial information. If your child will be out for a short time period (for example, to wait to testing and/or test results), he/she can access his/her teacher's ItsLearning pages for daily assignments, etc. In this situation, all learning is done asynchronously. If a longer quarantine is necessary, we will switch your child to a virtual learning schedule. This means that, though they will still access their teacher's ItsLearning page, they will also have scheduled Zooms for synchronous instruction. The Zooms may or may not be conducted by their current teacher. Note: This is true in all grade levels except Pre-K and First Grade. Because we do not have virtual teachers at MWE for these grade levels, Zoom sessions are not available.
If a student or staff member tests positive, we have very specific and thorough protocols that we follow. Ms. Vendetti and Nurse Nicole, along with the district safety officer and intake nurse, conduct a case review. Each case is handled on an individual basis to determine if anyone had prolonged close contact exposure from the COVID positive individual at school and the mitigation protocols that were in place at the time of exposure. If it is determined that a student has had prolonged, close contact for at least 15 continuous minutes with an individual that has tested positive for COVID, the parent/guardian and student will be contacted and the student will be sent home to self-quarantine.
In general, we look at mitigating measures (i.e., were masks worn consistently, was social distancing in place, were hand washing and disinfecting protocols followed, etc.), the amount of time exposed to the other student with/without mitigating protocols, and other information (i.e., information from doctors and so forth). It is a truly investigative procedure, with required questions, forms and documentation designed to get the most information to make the best possible decision for our students, teachers, and families.
Since March, you've heard me answer many, many questions with "It depends." This is certainly true as we navigate this new territory. Please know that your family's health and safety is our number one priority, and we will continue doing all we can to keep our Eagles safe and in the nest. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to Ms. Vendetti, Nurse Nicole, or me.
Together, we are Growing Great Minds - and keeping our Eagles safe - at MWE!

Counselor's Corner
This month we’re continuing to talk about Gratitude!
The dictionary defines it as: “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.” The definition we are using in class is: Gratitude: choosing to notice and appreciate things in our life, things in others, and things in the world.
Here are some suggestions about how you can continue your family discussions at home.
Books
*Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts
Jeremy really wants a pair of new shoes. However, Jeremy’s grandma is determined to help him understand the value of “needs” vs. “wants.” He is more determined than ever to have those shoes, even a thrift-shop pair that are much too small. Jeremy learns what matters most is Gratitude for what he has, and giving to others in need.
*A Chair For My Mother by Vera Williams
A little girl wants to save up her coins to show her mother her Gratitude by buying her a big comfy chair. Her mother works long hours as a waitress and deserves a nice place to sit after being on her feet all day at the diner. This heartwarming story teaches about overcoming hardships, the value of saving money, and working together towards a common goal.
*The Thankful Book by Todd Parr
Journey through some ordinary things to be extraordinarily thankful for along with the
reasons why with brilliant illustrations by beloved author and illustrator Todd Parr.
*The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein
This generous tree loves his boy so much that he gives and gives, even when there’s not
much left to give. But will his boy be grateful?
*The Most Thankful Thing by Lisa McCourt
Find out what every parent in thankful for in this beautiful treasure about Gratitude.
*Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson

cupboards are bare?
*Grow Grateful by Sage Foster
Grow with Kiko on a camping trip and watch for ways she shows Gratitude for family, friends,
and chances while learning that Gratitude can increase happiness and strengthen
relationships.
Activity:
Start a Family Joy Journal where you keep an ongoing list of gifts (people, places, things) that you are grateful for and how you showed your Gratitude for that thing. Try to write in it each day for 30 days. Write as many things as you can think of for that day as possible. How many days until you reach 100? How about 1000?

Staff Spotlights!
Ms. Perkins
Hello!! My name is Kiara Perkins and this is my third year teaching Special Education and my second year here at Meadow Wood!! I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013 and completed my teaching certification in 2018.
I am originally from Virginia and moved to Houston when I became a flight attendant. I have no family here but, I have plenty of friends to hang out and have fun with. For the holidays, I go to Florida to visit my mom, grandma, and 12 year old sister. In my free time I love to cook different things and making treats for special events.
I am so grateful to be a part of this community and I look forward to continuing growing great minds!
Dr. Kolpek
My name is Erin Kolpek, but you will likely hear me referred to by my MWE family as “Dr. K.” This is my 2nd year as a teacher at MWE, and my 16th year as a special educator. Before I learned to harness my superpowers as a special education teacher and advocate, I served in the United States Navy as a Cryptologic Technician Interpretive, or CTI. While I am not able to share specific details of my work during active duty, I can tell you that I worked as a Chinese Language interpreter and analyst.
Although I was born and raised just down Dairy Ashford in Alief, I feel extremely lucky to have lived in California, Hawaii, and the Washington, D.C. area. (I belong near and will return to the ocean someday soon!) In 2012, I returned to Houston to be closer to my family and spend time with my beloved seven nephews and niece.
While in the Navy, I earned my Bachelors in Psychology with an emphasis on Asian Studies from Chaminade University of Honolulu. After leaving the Navy, I received my Masters in Special Education (ED/LD) from George Mason University in Virginia, and finally, my Doctorate in Special Education Professional Leadership from the University of Houston in 2018.
My passion and roles in schools involve all things behavior-related, and I continue to serve as an Adjunct at the University of Houston where I teach Special Education and Behavior Courses to aspiring teachers and administrators.
I am beyond excited to return to the classroom, where the true joy happens! When I’m not thinking about how to ensure my students are successful and achieving individual learning targets, I enjoy walking my dog, Dexter, and riding my bike around the Heights. I’m an animal enthusiast – I share my abode with my two cats, Artemis and Hazel, and my beloved raptor (chicken), Lily.
Ms. Zuelke
My name is Kate Zuelke and I have been a teacher with Spring Branch going on 5 years. This is my second year at Meadow Wood Elem and I'm loving every minute of it! The students are my favorite part about coming to work each day. I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I went to University of Houston and graduated in 2016. After that, I went straight into teaching.
I knew I wanted to be a teacher ever since I was little. I not only watched my mother as a teacher for 30 + years, but I was a student who struggled as a learner. I have had amazing teachers and my mother to help me along the way and it is there, that I built the passion for working with students who have unique learning differences. I got married in June 2019, and bought a house close to Meadow Wood. In my free time, I have been demoing and repairing the house to make it our forever home and getting it ready for a baby! My husband and I found out that we have a baby girl on the way due in March! It’s a wild year, but it’s been made a lot better by coming to work and seeing children’s faces in the classroom and on zoom!
Ms. Bass
I graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University way back in 1991 with a BS degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. I spent some time teaching in private and public schools before coming to SBISD in 2004. I am married to my husband Richard and we have two daughters, Rebeca and Georgina. This is a big year in our family because I have a graduating senior from Stratford High School. In my free time, I enjoy trying new recipes, baking familiar recipes and reading. I am also addicted to playing angry birds pop when I have more than one hour to spare.
Ms. Venegas
Hello! My name is Chelsea Venegas and I am the AIM teacher here at Meadow Wood Elementary. This is my first year at MWE and I am beyond excited! This will be my sixth year teaching and I am thrilled that MWE is my new home! I grew up in San Diego, California and studied Sociology at Cal State San Marcos and decided I wanted to become a Special Education teacher. I started my career teaching Resource and spent the past three years working with children with autism and love every minute of it! I am so proud to be MWE’s new AIM teacher!
I live in Houston with my best friend and husband, Jourdan. We have been married for a year now and we have two beautiful dogs, Louie and Ellie. In my free time I love cooking new dishes, hanging out with my fur-babies and hubby, traveling the world, and trying new coffee shops and restaurants around Houston. We are going to have an awesome year!
Nurse Nicole
Hello, I'm Nicole Gruenberger. This is my eighth year as a nurse at MWE. I'm a proud Canadian-Texan. I'm married to my sweet husband Kurt and have two children, Emma 20, and Will 19. I have been a nurse for over thirty years, and have always worked with children. Your kids keep me young (at heart), and make me laugh everyday. What more could I need? In my spare time I enjoy reading the paper and watching Bravo and crime documentaries.
Ms. Milton
Howdy! My name is Tonya Milton and I am a Speech Language Pathologist with eight years of experience as a speech therapist in both the school and clinical practice settings. This is my third academic year working in SBISD, as I previously served Thornwood Elementary School and Stratford High School. Prior to this, my school experience includes working for Clear Creek ISD. I graduated from the University of Houston with a Master of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders in 2012 in order to pursue this amazing career.
Prior to beginning my career as a speech language pathologist, I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communications in 1998. I then became an educator for the Houston Independent School District (HISD), and later the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP). During the course of my decade long teaching career I taught children in the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th grades.
I am a native and very proud Houstonian, and my family and I live in the Energy Corridor of West Houston. I have been married to my husband Steven for 9 years, and we have two amazing children: Olivia (7) and August (5) who both attend Meadow Wood Elementary. We are a family of proud Eagles! I enjoy Aggie football, traveling, discovering new restaurants, and spending quality time with my family.
Ms. Rankin
Hi, Meadow Wood Family! My Name is Rachel Rankin and this is my 3rd year at MWE as a dyslexia interventionist. I love teaching reading and I am so happy to be here!
I grew up in Conroe, Texas with my parents and two brothers. In December of 2000, I graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Early Childhood. This is my 21st year in education at the elementary level. Prior to moving to Houston, I taught in The Woodlands as a kindergarten teacher and then as a reading/dyslexia interventionist.
I live in Spring Branch with my husband, Todd, and our three children Nash (16), London (13), and Lexington (8). All three of our children attend SBISD schools…Meadow Wood Elementary, Spring Forest Middle School, and Stratford High School. Our family LOVES football! On Friday nights, you can find all of us in the stands or on the sidelines at Stratford football games cheering on the Spartans!
Ms. Hartfiel
My name is Corley Hartfiel and I am the new Diagnostician at Meadow Wood. I have been teaching special education students for the past eleven years and I am excited about my new position and getting to meet all the new teachers, students, and staff here at Meadow Wood.
I received my undergraduate degree in special education from the University of Houston and my Master’s from Texas Tech University. I am a single mom to two wonderful sons, Alec and Ethan. I am also a mom to three rescue cats, Hugo, Frick and Frack. In my free time, I enjoy reading my “book club” picks of the month, cooking, and spending time with my family.
I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Meadow Wood family and look forward to an exciting year.
Mr. Beck
My name is Michael Beck. Many of the kids here know me as Mr. Mike. I have a B.A. in Sociology from Salisbury University. I have been at Meadow Wood for the past 8 years. I started out in the Medically Fragile classroom as a paraprofessional. I moved on to an AIM paraprofessional position 3 years ago.
This summer, my wife Sharon and I celebrated our 40th anniversary. We have 2 sons. The oldest, Matthew, lives in the Austin area and has 2 sons. Our youngest, Allen, lives here in Houston and has 2 daughters.
I spent 12 years active duty in the Army (6 years in Military Intelligence, 6 years in electronics calibration and repair), and 3 years in the Texas National Guard. After leaving the Army in 1993, I worked for Texas Instruments in their computer repair center. The division I worked in was sold to Solectron Manufacturing and I moved into an engineering technician position. In 2005, my wife and I moved to Maryland to care for her mother. I entered into education as an accommodation assistant working with high school students who were below grade level in reading/writing and math. I enjoyed working with the students. This led me to make a career change to education. My wife and I returned to Texas in 2011.
I like to read in my spare time and spend lots of time outside.
Ms. Kile
Hello, my name is Mary Kile. I was a former employee of SBISD for 25 years before retiring. During my time with Spring Branch I had various positions with Special Education. I am very excited to be back at Spring Branch as new member of the Meadow Wood family. I am currently working with the medically fragile students, this position is so rewarding, even with the students many challenges. I also love seeing their strength and growth every day.
I have a son and a daughter, who were graduates of Northbrook High School. I also, have 3 grandchildren. I have a dog named Kalleigh, who likes to think she is the boss. She is silly, loving and one of my best friends. In her mind she runs the show. She loves to go on car rides and tries to sneak into the car to come to school.
When I am not at school, I enjoy traveling and hiking. I also enjoy visiting historical sites and leaning about our country’s history. My favorite relaxation spot is the beach.

From the President
Hello Eagle Families,
I hope you are all doing well! Here at Meadow Wood, we are counting down to the holidays.
Just a few reminders to make sure you join PTA, make sure you update your child's current teacher in the MTK system, and remember to check below on our Redemption Programs. Various places give Meadow Wood money back each time you spend money there, so go ahead and link up your accounts!
Please also see below for information about Project Study. This is a program that has money dedicated specifically to it that is not otherwise attached to our budget. The money goes to proposals that are voted on by a committee, and the money goes back to our classrooms and teachers! Proposals can be written by parents or teacher or other staff, so please ask your teacher if there is something you could submit for them! Those proposals are due next Friday!
We also have the School Bell Award coming up, so please read below and nominate a staff member who has gone above and beyond this year. We know they all have, so a nomination would mean a lot!
Thanks to everyone for your support,
Catie Winegar
MWE PTA President
School Bell Award
Each year, the SBISD Council of PTAs awards its School Bell Award to an outstanding SBISD Staff Member (teacher, administrator, counselor, specialist, etc.) who promotes the objectives of the PTA and is an advocate for all children. What are the objectives of the PTA, you might ask? Briefly, they are ensuring that every child's potential becomes his/her reality, promoting the welfare of our Eagles in home, school and community, as well as promoting greater cooperation between parents and teachers to enhance the educational well-being of our students.
If you know of any staff member who goes above and beyond for our students and who has had a tremendous impact on the school community, please nominate them. Feel free to enlist the help of students for your nominations. Recent recipients include Tabitha Pena, Ami Rapp, Lynne Luberger, Rhonda DeLeon, Natalie Waggenspack, Jessica Leonard and Laura Weber.
Kindly send the name of your nominee and a description as to why you think they should win the School Bell Award to Keisha Barnes at ksbarnes@gmail.com. Please submit your nominations by Friday, December 4th. We look forward to reading them. Our nominee will attend the Founder’s Day Banquet hosted by SBISD council of PTAs in February.
Project Study
It’s time for the PTA Project Study Program! This program allows any PTA member to apply for funds to enhance the school and/or support student needs. We need parent and teacher committee members to help with the application process. The volunteer time is minimal, anticipating 2 after school Zoom meetings, and will consist of reviewing applications and interviewing the applicants.
If you are interested in serving on the program committee, please send an email to Nicole Knutsen at nicole281@yahoo.com. Names will be drawn lottery style, so get your name in the hat now!
If you are interested in submitting a proposal for the committee to review, applications are due November 20th. Requested items include, but are not limited to, teacher and instructional materials, classroom equipment, PTA-sponsored programs. See the MWE PTA website (https://meadowwoodpta.membershiptoolkit.com/projectstudy) for details on the program and the application.
