The Manning Weekly Newsletter
October 11, 2019
Dear Families,
It was so nice to see many of you this week for the extraordinary band, orchestra and choir concerts. We are truly lucky to work with talented, hard-working musicians and singers, and we are lucky to have your support!
I wanted to take an opportunity to update you on the progress of our Design Advisory Group (DAG), who is working collaboratively with Jeffco Facilities and our architects to make decisions about the addition being built at Manning.
As a reminder, the timeline for our addition is as follows:
- In October of 2019, the Design Advisory Group will work in a collaborative decision-making model to help the design team of architects and Jeffco Facilities to understand and define the specific scopes of work based on the general scope outlined by the District.
- Based on decisions and recommendations from the DAG, the addition will be designed during the 2019-2020 school year, and it is scheduled to be completed before the 2021-2022 school year.
A couple of clarifications about the addition:
The addition is being designed as a replacement for the temporary buildings (that we lovingly call the "cottages"). The DAG has expressed a need for additional classrooms for more teachers to decrease class size in our electives. We are hopeful the facilities budget allows us to create these additional instructional spaces.
The cottages will be removed from our site once the addition is complete.
The addition will not be large enough to increase our enrollment. We will continue to serve 225 students per grade level.
The design team determined that the original building constructed in the 1950's is structurally sound and in good condition. There will be renovations and improvements to this part of the building, but it will stay relatively unchanged.
Our existing building and cottages will be minimally impacted by construction while school is in session. We will be able to have a relatively "normal" 2020-2021 school year in our current facilities.
There are plans to work with a traffic engineer to improve traffic flow both on our campus and on the neighboring streets. Though I have never seen a school traffic pattern that is perfect, I am hopeful that these additional adjustments will help keep our students safer and keep the neighborhood streets clearer during drop off and pick up.
With that context, I am excited to share the initial decisions the DAG has made:
We have recommended to the design team to build the addition to the South of our original building, which puts the 1950's construction between the 2004 addition and the 2020 addition. This minimizes the impact to our current facilities and eliminates the cost of moving the temporary buildings during construction.
The placement of the addition will create a second courtyard. The DAG is lucky to have input from our students in Design Thinking about what that second courtyard could be.
We will continue to work through the design process, and I will do my best to update you as we make recommendations to the design team. If you have any questions or feedback, please don't hesitate to call, email or schedule a meeting with me. I welcome the conversation!
Thanks, as always, for sharing your kids with us; it is our honor to serve them.

Parent Teacher Conferences next week!
All conferences with teachers will be in their classrooms.
We had a significant number of parents last year express frustration about how long they had to wait for conferences, so you will notice some of our teachers implementing the following procedures.
They may set a timer for 7 minutes and remind you that this is the time limit. Please understand that this open-house style parent-teacher conference is not the appropriate time or setting to have extended conversations with your student's teachers. If you would like the opportunity to discuss something with them at length, you are welcome to reach out to your counselor (Last names A-K, Kelsey.Gaines@jeffco.k12.co.us/Last Names L-Z Guy.Gordon@jeffco.k12.co.us) to schedule an appointment with the teacher(s) you'd like to meet with.
Some teachers may open their classroom to all families who are waiting for a conference instead of having you wait in the hall. When the line is in the hallway, teachers cannot see that someone is waiting for them. If you need to discuss something with teachers that requires more privacy, reach out to your counselor (Last names A-K, Kelsey.Gaines@jeffco.k12.co.us/Last Names L-Z Guy.Gordon@jeffco.k12.co.us) to schedule an appointment with the teacher(s) you'd like to meet with.
Teachers want your kids to attend! it is important that they are a part of your conversation about their learning, especially as they make this important transition from elementary to secondary school.

A Message from Manning Sources of Strength!
Written by: Aidan Whitney 7th Grade Sources of Strength Peer Leader
What is Sources of Strength? What does it do for the community? Why is it at Manning?
Sources of Strength is a suicide prevention program, one of the first programs to actually have facts behind it and show a great deal of success. Sources was first established in North Dakota in 1998. Its goal was to help teens who are under threat of suicide by helping them find their strengths. There are eight strengths: Mental Health, Medical Access, Spirituality, Family Support, Positive Friends, Mentors, and Generosity. These strengths are to help fight depression and bring a clear positive mind to a teen in distress.
What does it do for the community?
Sources of Strength has done a whole lot for communities all around the US. In 2005 it was awarded the Public Health Practice award by the American Association of Public Health. In 2006 Sources partnered with multiple universities to being a community research partnership and conduct a randomized trial with 18 High Schools in Georgia, New York, and North Dakota. This research demonstrated that adult and Peer Leaders can have a large impact on student population and positive perceptions in adult support. Sources of Strength has developed and introduced solutions and hopes for teens under threat of suicide in multiple communities.
Why is it at Manning?
Sources of Strength was introduced to Manning in January of 2017. Manning brought Sources of Strength to our school to spread awareness that suicide is an issue and a danger and to build a positive culture and community. Manning has selected a positive group of students to make sure students look out for each other and help people who need support, whether in our school, or outside our school. Manning Sources of Strength is focusing right now on getting the word out. Every couple of months, Sources of Strength organizes an assembly sharing a message about the challenges of life. Right now Manning Sources of Strength is focusing on getting the word out. We are trying to remind students to look back at their strengths, what makes them strong and happy and to use that as fuel to keep on going. Sources of Strength focuses on hope, help, and strength. Sources of Strength has reached from a small High school in North Dakota all the way to Manning. Sources of Strength has helped thousands of teens recover from depression and Suicidal thoughts.

Parking Lot Reminders!
Parking and exiting a vehicle is prohibited along the yellow curb in front of the building and in the “bus loop” to the North of the building. Please feel free to use both the Bus Loop and the Main Parking Lot in the mornings and afternoons to help alleviate congestion. Parking along Alkire or along 32nd is prohibited. Please keep traffic flowing by pulling up all the way to the end of your loop before letting your student out of your vehicle, and by filling in gaps between vehicles in cue. Sometimes, when a car stops in front of the main doors, it backs traffic up into the street. We ask that both students and families utilize the crosswalks at the stoplight to cross either 32nd or Alkire. We encourage families to stagger their pick ups at the end of the day as they naturally stagger drop off at the beginning of the day. You are welcome to pick up your students any time between the final bell and 15 minutes after school releases. There will be supervision in front of the building until then. We ask that students and families stay off their phones and stay aware as they walk or drive through the parking lot.

HONESTY
Charlie Labbo is always honest about his math homework even when he knows he was checked off, he tells the teacher if he didn't finish all 30 problems.
EFFORT
Mrs. Cahill is always working and she works hard to make sure her students are doing their best. She gives her 1,000,000% on everything. Thank You Mrs Cahill!
Chloe B. is always that one person that just by looking at her you can smile. Although she is going through something hard she keeps her head up and has a positive attitude. I admire Chloe very much because of her positive mindset.
Mrs. Sawyer picked up my chrome book when I left it by my locker and made sure I got it.
When I dropped all my things Cameron O'Donnell helped me pick them up.
she makes the effort to take care of me and my little sister.
Millie Morris showed great effort in access by going above and beyond on her assignments!
ACHIEVEMENT
I nominate the amazing students who performed in the CHOIR, BAND and ORCHESTRA concerts! They worked so hard this first quarter and grew as musicians and performers. BRAVO!
RESPECT
Verena Osgood is my best friend and shes always kind and shows respect to me and I always think she should get a reward to herself when shes kind to someone!
Keiten Abeyta stood up for me after some girls were not being the nicest to me. I thought that this was very nice of him and I appreciated it.
When my earring fell out, Vivian Miner picked it back up for me.
Jayden Begay spent his whole recess cleaning up trash on the field and, when I asked him why, he said he was caring for the earth. Thanks for respecting our earth, Jayden! You inspired me to pick up trash too.
TEAMWORK
Anna McCormick waits for me everyday at my locker for me to get my stuff for recces if I am late
Whenever it snows, Mr. Hageman spends his morning shoveling to make sure the ramps are clear and safe for teachers and students. Thanks for being awesome, Mr. Hageman!
