Back to the Basics of PBIS
Teach, Model, and Reinforce!
Teach, teach, teach! Spend plenty of time up front teaching students the expected behaviors throughout the school and give them opportunities to practice and receive feedback. If you haven't brought PBIS into all your classrooms, this is a great time to support teachers as they define and teach classroom expected behaviors based on the school-wide expectations. Encourage teachers to collaborate with students on building a classroom behavior matrix and discussing how school behavior and home behavior may be different, but equally valid and important. Below is an example (thank you, Valley Springs!) and some templates to get you started. Click on the picture above to see how one teacher did it!
Make sure expectations are visible to everyone, everywhere throughout the school! As students are learning the expected behaviors, encourage all staff to model the behaviors and to acknowledge students frequently in the first days and weeks of school. Students will begin to use the expected behavior as they are taught and encouraged, giving teachers more time to teach! As most students begin to use the behaviors regularly, you will be able to identify the students that may need extra support.
We wish you all a successful start to the 2021-2022 school year. Stay safe, stay well, and stay positive! Be sure to check out our Events calendar for trainings and workshops to refresh, enhance, reboot, or learn something new. We look forward to working with you!
