What's New at KCS?!?
February/March Student Monthly Challenge:
Students are working hard to understand and share others' feelings. Students who empathy and make an effort to perceive another's point of view and emotions are being nominated by their teachers! The challenge for March will be to think about their thinking! Teachers will look for students who are reflecting on their thought processes and actions as they are learning new material.
Grades 5 & 6 Intramural Basketball
The intramural basketball league has started! Students in grades 5 & 6 who play intramurals are divided into four teams. They play two games a week on Wednesdays and Fridays after school. Thank you to Mrs. Saunders who organizes this program, and to all of the volunteer teacher and student coaches.
Read Across America Week
During the first week of March (3/2-3/6) we will celebrate Reading! This linked document outlines some of the activities that we will do throughout the week. Read it as soon as possible because one activity can be started with your child(ren) as soon as tomorrow afternoon!

Eighth Grade Graduation
This year, KCS will be adding an Awards Ceremony the night before graduation. This ceremony will honor students who are receiving community, academic, and citizenship awards. The awards ceremony will be a public event. The families of eighth-graders who are receiving awards will be notified in advance, but all are welcome to attend.
This decision was made by the leadership team after receiving feedback over the years from graduation participants and attendees. We would like to focus the night of graduation on the entire eighth-grade class and the importance that this night holds for everyone. We look forward to starting this new event and celebrating the many accomplishments of our eighth graders.
Absences & Family Trips
Please note: Submission of a request will not guarantee excused absences.
Additional important information to note in the Parent/Student Handbook, the following section:
(pg. 7)
Connecticut State law requires parents to make sure that their children between the ages of 5 to 18 attend school regularly. Daily attendance is a key factor in student success, thus any absence from school is an educational loss to the student. Make-up work is not provided ahead of time. Missed school work must be made up when the child returns to school.

The Board recognized Debra Ravlin, a dental hygienist at Brooker Memorial, for her dedication to the health and wellness of KCS students.
The Board made a motion to recommend that KCS pay for one-sixth of the costs of all non-resident sports and activities that will be offered through the Regional Middle School Sports and Activities Program. This recommendation was taken to the ABC committee meeting on Wednesday, February 13, 2020.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 4, 2020, in the Kent Center School library.
