Year 5 Newsletter
Wednesday 8th June
Welcome to the Year 5 newsletter!
Dear Parents,
We hope you are well!
Children and teachers are enjoying the varied learning engagements of our final unit. In English, children have written some fantastic poetry in a number of forms. They have enjoyed researching poetry and learning a chosen poem to perform. Each class is engaged in drama activities which are helping them to find a variety of strategies to resolve conflicts. Students will begin to turn these into plays for performance.
As the year draws to a close, we will begin to send books home for parents to have a look at and keep for posterity! Children are thinking excitedly about the year ahead. You will be informed who your child's class teacher will be in Year 6 on Monday 20th June. Please send an email to inform us if your child will be missing any days of school before the end of term.
Enjoy the long weekend!
The Year 5 Team
Unit of Inquiry
Our final UOI for the year is:
Sharing the Planet
Central Idea: Reaching a resolution during periods of conflict is influenced by the actions and reactions of all involved.
Lines of Inquiry:
● Causes of conflict (personal, local and global)
● Strategies used to resolve conflict
● Consequences of resolutions
Maths
We have been working through our unit on Pattern and Function. The unit conceptual understandings are:
· Functions are relationships or rules that uniquely associate members of one set with members of another set.
· By analysing patterns and identifying rules for patterns it is possible to make predictions.
· Patterns can often be generalised using algebraic expressions, equations or functions.
· Exponential notation is a powerful way to express repeated products of the same number.
The 'I Can' statements for the children are:
· Investigate and represent patterns using words, symbols, numbers, tables and graphs.
· Identify rules for patterns to predict future terms.
· Identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers.
· Solve equivalent number sentences involving multiplication and division to find unknown quantities.
A reminder that children can support their learning in the classroom by completing the Mathletics activities online. Well done to all the children who have already collected awards for their participation so far!
Swimming
The children are enjoying the opportunity to have a swimming lesson each week. However, unfortunately some classes have missed their lesson due to inclement weather. When this is the case, the swimming teachers come to the class to teach water safety.
