Board Recognitions
Mr. Terry Garrison presented Ms. Margaret Ellis, former Board of Education member, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award. Ellis is being presented the highest award given by the state for giving over 40 years of service to Henderson and Vance County. She served the Vance County BOE for 32 years. Notable of her accomplishments include being on the BOE when the district entered the Leandro lawsuit. She was also a large part of the civil rights and environmental justice in both Vance and Warren Counties.
School Bus Driver Appreciation
School Bus Driver Appreciation
Every year in NC, the week of Valentine's Day is declared as Love the Bus week by the Governor. Chief Operations Officer, Kevin Perdue, shared that in NC, over 13,000 school buses carry more than 790,000 students to and from school every day. We are thankful for each of our bus drivers. The BOE recognized bus drivers with perfect attendance during the 2022-2023 school year.

The Board of Education recognized each of our school counselors, honoring them as part of National School Counseling Week. February 6-10, counselors were honored Nationwide for their commitment to supporting students academically and emotionally.

Black History Month
VCS Honors Black History Month
Dr. Tim Hall, Vance County Schools Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, presented information and resources about Black History Month to the Vance County Board of Education. The resource library has been shared with staff throughout the district to utilize in classrooms and building-wide. The entire nation has come to recognize the importance of Black history and we continue to promote the study of Black history all year, to encourage our students to learn the history and how it has shaped America.

Action Items by the Board of Education
The Board of Education voted and approved the following:
- ESS Staffing Management System (substitute placement to replace previous system)
- Pathways to Practice Cohort 3
- Paxton Patterson Lab
- Project Arrow
Personnel
The Board of Education approved 13 employment recommendations. We would like to formally welcome the following: Tammy Johnson (Aycock), Lloyd Watkins, Jr. (EMR), Rocquan Perry (EMR), Hailey Reavis (EOY), Amanda O'Connor (NH), Dianne Davis (Transportation), Christy Bean (Warren), Jamie Grissom (ZV), Thomas Oothoudt (VCHS), Tammy Austin (VCMS), Tammy Barrow (VCMS), Kanisha Burwell (Transportation), Mercedes Hargrove (Transportation).
The Board accepted resignations for 5, retirement for 1, temporary/substitute employment for 12, transfer/promotions for 9 and 1 contracted services.
