Celebrating & Supporting our Community
Welcome Kennedy/NAHS/VAAS CoS students, families and community members! Please join us in celebrating all of the fantastic work that is happening at our schools. Thank you to our amazing principals, teachers, staff, students and families who have made all of these events possible. You make our Community of Schools a shining star!
Kindness Matters at Van Gogh!
In honor of Global Kindness Day, Van Gogh staff and students showed their love and kindness by forming a heart. A special thank you to Sky Skopes for their community outreach.
Tulsa's 3rd Graders Learn their Multiplication Facts through Music
In Ms. Goldstein's 3rd grade class, students have been practicing their multiplication facts and skip counting through singing and dancing to remixes of current songs such as Old Town Road or Bad Guy. Students genuinely look forward to singing these facts daily, dancing, and using them to help navigate the basic math facts and higher-level math concepts that include multiplication and division. Great work Room 9 Tigers!
Balboa Celebrates Read Across America Week and Enjoys Friday Fun Day
Balboa Gifted/ High Ability Magnet had Board Member Schmerelson visit as they celebrated Read Across America Week. On Friday, they practiced meditation during lunch for Friday Fun Day.
Design Thinking and Collaborative Learning Groups at Porter Middle School
6th grade students in Mr. Kangas' classes were asked to research, design and build a solar oven that would achieve temperatures of over 130 degrees Fahrenheit. They were given instructions and requirements for the build but no background information. They had to figure it out on their own. Their reward for achieving the required temperatures were homemade s'mores using their solar ovens. This project is a starting point for their upcoming unit on thermal energy. The solar oven project will help them transition into their new science unit as they talk about heat transfer and thermal energy. No better way to get students engaged than to infuse sugar into your lessons!
Porter Teachers have been working together engaging in cycles of inquiry and conducting peer observations. In cooperative learning groups, students rotate through 7 stations and interpret and compute quotients of fractions, identify the error and solve the problem correctly then describe and explain the error using the RACE writing strategy.
