Dates: 1100 A.D. - 1500 A.D.The term Gothic was coined by Italian writers of the Renaissance, who attributed the invention of medieval architecture to the Barbarian Gothic tribes that had destroyed the Roman Empire and its classical culture in the 5th century A.D.During the Gothic art period, many artists broke away from Byzantine and Romanesque art. The Gothic artists were founders of the movement towards greater realism. The most fundamental part of Gothic architecture is the pointed arch.Gothic art is credited to many buildings such as chapels and cathedrals.
