Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week!
October 23, 2017
MATH:
2.1 - This week our students will be reviewing the problem solving skills and strategies they have learned in this unit to solve one and two step story problems with, and without, regrouping. The unit 2 posttest will be given toward the end of this week. Thank you for continuing to practice addition and subtraction facts with your child!
2.2 - Basic subtraction facts practice sheets came home on Monday. Please work with your student for about 5 minutes a night on their facts. We've spent the week learning about 2D and 3D shape attributes. Next week we'll be partitioning rectangles into equal squares and talking about repeated addition and multiplication.
3.1 - The students will begin the second math unit. This week students will use arrays to demonstrate their understanding of multiplication as objects in groups. For example, they will interpret 5 x 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. They will also learn how repeated addition relates to arrays and multiplication facts.
READING:
This week we are continuing our nonfiction reading unit. The students have a variety of nonfiction books they are using to discover a new way to connect to reading. They are exploring familiar and unfamiliar topics. They are learning to develop questions and notice details found in texts. They are also learning to read with a voice that matches the content and are developing vocabulary usage and understanding. They are also beginning to compare and contrast information inside and across texts.
WRITING:
In our nonfiction writing unit the students have the opportunity to write A LOT of nonfiction books! They are learning to write with purpose as they consider the specific information their audience will need to know. They are also learning to make choices about how to shape their information and are deciding what kind of books to make. The students are provided with many opportunities for elaboration and revision as craft their nonfiction texts!
SCIENCE:
We are continuing our second science unit this week. The students will experiment with pushes and pulls as they explore the forces of motion!

Glo For It!
On October 13th we started our main fundraiser of the year with a fun pep rally! Students are requesting donations from friends and family for two weeks and the fundraising culminates on November 3rd with a school-wide celebration during the day. They will get their prizes, have a parade, games and a gym party. (And yes, trinkets will glow at the dance because the gym is very dark without lights on).
This celebration will have a similar format as Field day which is a wonderful event and a favorite of our children. By doing it during the day, every single student will be able to attend the celebration - we are so excited for this!!
We count on Glo For It funds to support many things that are not paid for by the county including in-house field trips, curriculum support materials,
books, technology, the Science Lab, and so much more!
