Artistic Happenings
We artists here at Alto Elementary are in the thick of it…. paint, glue, clay, paper, and lots of Creativity! We are all very busy because it is nearing the end of our school year and have some fantastic work to finish up before we go.
Kindergarten and First Grade: Students are enjoying some Color Theory lessons and have had some opportunities to paint. They love that! Kindergarten is in the middle of a mixed media project which will include Print-Making. First Grade students are beginning their Art Appreciation Study of Vincent VanGogh and will be producing a landscape in his style.
Second Grade: Students are getting “Crafty” as part of their Multi-Cultural study of Thailand. We are making hand Crafts inspired by those I found while shopping in the night markets in Chiang Mai, Thailand, many years ago. This is a mixed media project and is a functional form…. Students are choosing either a shoulder bag or a wall hanging with pockets. Our craft of choice will include real handmade paper from Thailand!
Third Grade: These artists are surprising themselves with drawing ability they didn’t know they had! Contour Line Drawing is a skill that takes patience and concentration, but offers the opportunity to draw with amazing accuracy! Practice does make progress and we are making a lot of progress as we try drawing something new each week.
Fourth and Fifth Grade: Both grade levels have made some exceptional pottery and are finishing the projects at this time. All works have been “fired” in the kiln and are being painted and shellacked in the fourth grade, and glazed in the fifth grade. Those beautiful, functional forms will be coming home within the next few weeks.
It is my hope and plan to make the perfect “dismount” to the completion of our most “interesting and challenging” school year! I have pretty much been able to make up the lessons missed last year and also fulfill the curriculum for this school year. The children should feel very accomplished!
Have a wonderful, blessed, and safe Summer break!
Sincerely and Artfully Yours,
