#nationalpoetrymonth in the Idea Lab - Mrs. Stephens
Thursday in the Idea Lab we celebrated National Poetry Month by reading several poems, critically discussing their concrete images as well as their underlying meanings, then using our Idea Lab materials to interpret an image from one of the poems. Fourth, third, and second grade students were allowed to select the medium through which they would creatively interpret the poem image of their choice. Students were able to elect to collaborate in groups or work individually. Most chose to work cooperatively with others, including one group who drew and colored a mural together. Communication was key in this project due to the time limitations of the class, and most projects pictured were created in 15 minutes or less.
Many interpretations were built with Legos, constructed with large foam blocks, or drawn or colored for the following poems by Robert Frost: “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”; “The Road Not Taken”; “A Patch of Old Snow”; and “To the Thawing Wind”. Several of Shel Silverstein’s poems were utilized as well; “Boa Constrictor” was recited by one student who knew it by heart; “Advice,” which is about William Tell shooting the apple off someone’s head, was constructed in Legos.
Foam blocks were used to depict the diverging paths—as well as the traveler trying to choose his path--from “The Road Not Taken.” Foam blocks were used as well as to create the horse, carriage, woods, and village from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Legos were utilized to create several variations of “A Patch of Old Snow” as well as the scenery from “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Many creative drawings were made and colored for all of the poems read.
The students worked remarkably well together and greatly enjoyed this creative lesson for #nationalpoetrymonth!
