Scarborough High School
November 5, 2021
Dear Students, Families, and Staff,
Today marks the end of the first quarter and the successful transition back to in-person learning five days a week. This has been a remarkable effort for everyone. As a school, we are staying focused on SEL (Social Emotional Learning) in our Advisory groups, Tuesday Tutorials for staff, weekly Staff Memos, and Community Dialogues. A new addition last week is the offering of a student Mindfulness Session every Tuesday during AEAST (Academic Enrichment And Support Time). We hope that all of these strategies are helping smooth out the reentry work.
Other than some make-up work for our NWEA testing, SHS has successfully completed our October testing month, including:
iReady testing for 9th Grade
PSAT testing for 10th and 11th Grades
NWEA testing for 11th grade
MIYHS (Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey) for all grades
This data gives us good information on how our students are doing and how we can use this information to help us improve teaching and learning.
We are currently wrapping up our fall season of athletics. Congratulations to all of our fall athletes and coaches for a fine season! Also, congratulations to our varsity Volleyball Team and Coach Stoddard, who won the state championship last Saturday. What a stupendous competition that was! Oak Hill Players opens, “HONK!” tonight! More information about show dates and times and how to purchase tickets in this letter! Good luck to our thespians! ECOS has restarted recycling in the building and has done some clean up projects on our campus! Sources of Strength and the Interact Club have left encouraging messages in chalk at our main entrance to encourage students and staff. The Math Team and VEX Robotics Team are gearing up to begin their competition season! At Scarborough High School we have an amazingly high percentage of students that get involved beyond their school academics!

Can You Help?
Student Absence Reporting
Families should report their high school student’s absence from school by calling the SHS main office at 730-5000 or by email at pdavis@scarboroughschools.org. A reason for the absence must be stated, otherwise SHS office staff will reach out to determine the reason for the absence.
Excusable reasons for an absence include:
Illness
Appointment
Religious holiday
Family Emergency
Planned absence
For planned absences (A full day or more out of school which is not illness or medical appointment related), students should report to Admin II with a note regarding the planned absences (please include the date(s) and reason) and Mrs. Newcomb will fill out a form which the student will bring around to the teachers to review and sign and then the student returns the form to Mrs. Newcomb for final approval and to record the dates in Power School.
For question about attendance, please contact the SHS main office at 730-5000 or 730-5005. or email us at pdavis@scarboroughschools.org
Pre-Screening Tool for School Attendance
As we enter the cold and flu season, please make sure you are considering this pre-screening tool daily before sending your child to school.
We hope that everyone is doing well and enjoys their Thanksgiving holiday, and we hope we can all find things to be thankful for this month. Happy Thanksgiving.
