KHS PAW PRINTS
October 2016
Reflections
Our teachers and staff truly make KHS a great place to work! Their love and care for students is evident in the lessons they prepare everyday--lessons that engage, challenge and motivate. For example, Coach Engel found a fun math song to help his Algebra 1 students remember the steps to solving equations then closed the lesson with the challenge of writing a compare/contrast paragraph of expression and equation. The kids loved it and the writing assignment challenged the students to think critically on paper. Mrs. Kilcrease had her students create a comic strip using an educational app; they first had to create a scenario depicting an assigned concept then using the app they created the characters, the scene, the conflict, and the resolution. All students enjoyed using the new software and their success was evident from the work they produced! Mr. Perez, the Ag teacher, created a Jeopardy game this week for his ninth graders as a review for an upcoming test. The students were engaged and loved competing for the points. Ms. Parker had her students create a model depicting the anatomy of the cell and present it to their peers. I saw cakes decorated like a cell, cut-out styrofoam replicas, and beautifully detailed colored posters. Students identified the parts and explained their function. Coach Chumley had his students create a rap song to the 10 Bill of Rights as a fun review. There are so many others I could share from this week alone! No doubt, KHS is a special place and I am blessed to be apart of a great team. I pray you, too, are blessed this week with many things that make you smile.
Enjoy! and Go Bobcats!

KHS SCIENCE DEPT. AWARDED 10,000 RURAL FARM MONSANTO GRANT
KERENS – Kerens ISD has received a $10,000 corporate grant to apply toward an aquaculture project that involves students from all three Kerens campuses, along with farmers from the surrounding agricultural community.
The rigorous grant approval process also included input from local educators, then further scrutiny from a national panel of farmers, along with math and science teachers from across the country. The grant award was announced in August, following the original grant submission in spring 2016. Grant applications were judged on merit, need and community support.
Kerens ISD’s project is titled "AFISH,” which stands for Aquaponics Farming Integrating Science and Horticulture. The project will consist of two self-sustaining aquaponic systems that will allow the propagation of fish and plants that could be used hypothetically for food for the community, according to James Briggs, Kerens High School science and biology teacher. The system will allow for students to explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) to enhance laboratory experiences and to spark interest in STEM careers, including farming.
“This program will be utilized district-wide across all three campuses, impacting students, teachers, parents and the community,” Briggs said. “Our small rural community is already excited about the application and is offering to help the school and students.”
To follow the implementation of the grant over the school year, a blog with photos has been set up on the school website, kerensisd.org just click on Monsanto icon. A more direct link to the ongoing project is https://sites.google.com/a/kerensisd.org/khs-afish-grant/.
The program, sponsored by agricultural corporate giant Monsanto, is titled America's Farmers Grow Rural Education, and was introduced in 2011 to partner with farmers to support their local school districts. America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education offers farmers the opportunity to nominate rural public school districts to compete for merit-based grants of either $10,000 or $25,000.
Local farmers who nominated KISD for the grant included Kerens Mayor Jeffrey Saunders, KISD trustee Randy Bancroft and Tim Crawford. The local grant committee consisted of Biology teacher James Briggs, KISD librarian Janice Quinn, Kerens High School counselor Ty Birnbaum and KHS assistant principal Brad Atkeisson.
