California Schools to Remain Closed
April 1, 2020
It's Official: Governor Newsom Directs California Schools to Remain Closed for the Remainder of the 2019-20 School Year
With heavy hearts, educators throughout California learned the news today that public schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. This means many things to us as educators. The lack of closure knowing we will not see our students in person before they move on is probably the most difficult reality we now have to accept.
I miss my students--the ones I see during the day and of course the ones after school and on the weekend. I miss my colleagues at the middle school where I work and Mr. Thomas, Mr. Ro and Mrs. Noonen at the TiPP office. What I've noticed, however, is the kindness and generosity of those I meet at the grocery store, gas station or restaurant pick-up lines. Though we may distance ourselves six feet apart and sometimes masked, we have learned to see each other as vulnerable humans. Some may have forgotten our priorities before this turn-of-events, but now we know it has always been to uphold each other and cherish this fragile life. We are in this together!
Consequently, we can no longer sustain the TiPP office, which has been part of our and your lives for so long. Mr. Prell and I opened our doors to the community ten years ago, and never could we have imagined that this was how it would end. We may have lost our brick-and-mortar, but we will rise again through the wonder that is technology.
Please let me know how I can help your children during this transition. Do they want to see me to at least say good-bye, or do they want to continue working together? This is possible! Zoom to the rescue! Whatever your family's decision, we understand and respect.
Here are some potential scenarios:
- Check-in with Mrs. Prell online or by e-mail; seek advice, ask questions and say good-bye. (Closure is important.)
- Check-in with Mrs. Prell online or by e-mail; seek advice, ask questions and let her know you want to continue learning together.
Either way, thank you for being an important part of my life. You have enriched it and hope that you feel likewise.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Love,
Mrs. Prell
