PHS Upcoming Events
Week of September 16th, 2019
Dear PHS Families,
With the change in the weather, it's easy to believe that the official start of the Autumn season is quickly approaching. The first few days of the new school year have been filled with excitement, as students are learning new routines, expectations, and approaches to learning. It should be a great year at PHS!
Picture Day at PHS is Tuesday, September 17th. Order forms were sent home with students earlier this week. Families may also review packages and order online using the button below.
The Red Cross and Potsdam PTSA will be conducting a blood drive in the Blue Gym on Wednesday, Sept. 18th from Noon - 6 p.m. Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are always welcome. All presenting donors will receive a free t-shirt. If your blood type is O Negative, O Positive, A Negative, or B Negative, please consider a Power Red Cell donation. You can schedule an appointment by going to www.redcrossblood.org and typing 13676 in the Zip/Sponsor Code box and then selecting “Potsdam High School.”
On Tuesday, September 17th, at 7:00 pm in the high school auditorium, nationally-known speaker and youth advocate Collin Kartchner will be discussing, "the negative effects of social media and screen addiction, while showing how to use it for doing good." The program is free and open to the public. Please see the flyer below for more information.
Potsdam High School will dismiss at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 18th, to allow faculty and staff to participate in professional development activities.
On September 20th, we'll have a presentation from six SUNY (State University of New York) schools called the SUNY Roadshow. They will talk about admissions, applications, financial aid, and what programs are available throughout the SUNY system. The presentation will be in the PHS auditorium and Juniors will be invited to all attend.
On October 1st, the guidance counselors will be taking interested Juniors and Seniors to the regional college fair in Ogdensburg. They will have the chance to talk individually with admissions representatives and military recruiters from all over the state and some from nearby states. Ms. White will be sending out information on how best to take advantage of a college fair when we get closer to the event. Students need to sign up in the Guidance Office to attend.
On October 1st, the Sophomore (10th grade) class will be participating in Canton-Potsdam Hospital's “Let’s Not Meet By Accident” program. This program is aimed at helping students understand the consequences of driving while impaired or distracted. Students will be working with a number of medical and law enforcement professionals and participate in a first responder simulation with the Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad, a trauma simulation with CPH doctors and nurses, and a visit to the morgue with the county coroner. Students will also engage in discussions with members of the St. Lawrence County STOP DWI program and the St. Lawrence Country Sheriff's Department. "Let's Not Meet By Accident" is a very comprehensive program, and we are thankful to all of the agencies and individuals who coordinate it.
Consider sharing your time and talents with the Potsdam PTSA (Parent-Teacher-Student Association) and help support the mission of Potsdam Central Schools. Please see the flyer below for more information on how you can become involved!
