NWEA/MAPS Testing
Next week we will be wrapping up our end-of-the-year NWEA/MAPS Testing in the area of mathematics. It is extremely important for your child to be in school on time each morning...unless--of course--(s)he is ill.
Basket Bash
Mark your calendars for the LES 21st Annual Basket Bash on Thursday, April 23rd. We are asking for your help with this fundraiser by requesting a donation from each student's family to help purchase items for classroom baskets. We are hoping to have a minimum of 50 different baskets to be raffled off at the bash. This year we are asking for $5.00, $10.00, or Donor's Choice. If you can give more, we certainly appreciate your generosity. Money will need to be submitted by Friday, March 20. Thank you so much for your help. Envelopes and donation forms are included in today's Friday folder.
Researchers
Our recent share topic about the presidents was one way for students to hone their researching skills, but they'll also been doing some in-depth researching about the animals that they might encounter along the 2020 Iditarod Trail. Be sure to ask your child which animal (s)he selected for this assignment. Remember, students will be sharing these finished products during the month of March for one of their share topics. Both of these activities help us to address the following Indiana Academic Language Arts standard"
"Conduct short research on a topic.
· Identify a specific topic or question of interest.
· Locate information in reference texts, electronic resources, or through interviews.
· Recognize that some sources may be more reliable than others.
· Record relevant information in their own words.
· Present the information, choosing from a variety of formats."
Safety Matters
The presenter from the Jacy House's Safety Matters program did a very nice job speaking to the children about ways to stay safe in a variety of situations. She did so in a most age-appropriate way, too. A summary of her presentation is included in the Friday folder. The weekend would be a great time for you to debrief with your child about these two-day visits. Click here for more information about the program.
Math: Elapsed Time
We are taking our telling time to the next level, starting first with Identifying the start time, change of time, and end time in real-world elapsed time problems. Next, we are using an open number line to solve elapsed time word problems to both the nearest hour and the the nearest five minutes. Have your child show you how this is done. With these scenarios we are meeting the following Indiana Academic Mathematics Standard:
- "Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals on the hour or half hour."
Science: Engineering Exercise
After learning that sled dogs need to satisfy their desire to run, students had a ball designing and creating a model of a sled dog exercise wheel (think hamster wheel), a real thing in Alaska. I'm here to tell you that both the process and the products were amazing things to observed. I'm telling you, the creativity and ingenuity of this group of young scientists is going to be something to watch. Be sure to check out some of the photos and video below.

Family Literacy Night
LES is planning another Family Literacy Night on Wednesday, March 18th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. We are hopeful you will be able to join us for this jungle-themed night of literacy. This exciting night is held in conjunction with the fourth graders' famous Hoosiers wax museum night.
Jump Rope for Heart Gratitude
Thank you for your incredible support of our annual Jump Rope for Heart initiative. It's always heartwarming to see the amazing contributions that come our way all for this great cause.
This Week's Share Topic
Siblings: Tell us about your brothers or sisters or other kids that live with you. Do you get along or fight? What do you argue about? You may bring in pictures of them or write a story about a time you did or did not get along. If you don’t have siblings, then how about telling us about your cousins?
