Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
January 7th-11th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will start our next mini unit on Sound. We will spend till January 18th learning about how to change the pitch and volume of a sound. Because it's such a short unit (3 Lessons), the study guide will be given today and will be filled out as we go. The unit test will be on the 18th. We will take a short 10 question quiz on Friday 11th over Lessons 1 and 2. There will also be an extra credit project coming home Friday for students who are interested. It is completely optional but for those wanting to do it, the projects will be due on Tuesday 22nd.
- Ms. Uhlenhake/Mrs. Leonard's/Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: In ELA this week we will be working on summarizing and nonfiction text features and structure. We will be working on our Snowed In stories and Words their Way spelling. In math we will review patterns and in/out function tables. We will also take our Fraction unit pretest and start our new fraction unit this week. Students will be identifying fractions using pictures, words, and number lines.
- Ms. Harris' GT Math/ELA: This week in math we will review patterns and start our next big unit, Fractions. Students will learn how to identify, create, and label fractional amounts. Next week we will begin comparing fractions and finding/creating equivalent fractions. We will be starting math stars the week of January 28th, so if you are interested in helping out during this, please check out the information below. In ELA, we will begin analyzing nonfiction text and identifying text features and text structure. We will also finish our next set of Words of the Day and a quiz over the last 20 words will be Friday 11th. Students will not need to spell the words but understand their definitions using what they know about prefixes and suffixes. Spelling will also start back this week with tests on your child's designated days NEXT week. Finally in writing, Ms. Macanas will be helping the students create imaginative stories about being snowed in here at FMES. Those will be predominately done in class and will be due on Friday 18th.

GT Parents: Math Stars
The week of January 28th, we will be starting our 10 week Math Stars Unit. This is a chance for students to challenge themselves with leveled math problems that require them to use problem-solving strategies and collaborate with each other in a small group. This will be for 30 minutes once a week and will require parent volunteers. You will not need to teach anything, but rather facilitate the group discussions (with an answer key :) ). I know 10 weeks is a big commitment, so if you'd like to pair up with another parent and alternate weeks that would be great. It would be from 8-8:30 and once we know who all is interested we can pick a day. Please email me if you are interested and let me know which day works best for you. Thank you so much!!
