District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.
Inclement Weather Information
When the weather gets snowy or icy, school schedules may be affected. The District generally posts the announcement of delayed school opening or school closure by 5:15 a.m. All Portland Metro area media outlets announce the information on TV newscasts and online.
The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely; the ability for students and parents to get to school safely, and the ability of employees to get to work safely and on time. The decision that is made will be for the entire District. As always, parents may choose to make different decisions based on their particular location.
The District will notify parents via SchoolMessenger with a Non-School Hours Emergency message. Please manage your communication preferences in SchoolMessenger InfoCenter.

Early Release in Action: Book Ladders
It can be a challenge for a teacher to get a reluctant reader excited about reading. On a Wednesday in October, Reading Intervention Teacher Danielle Scribner shared with other teachers how book ladders have made a difference for many of her students.
What is a book ladder? It’s a small collection of books on the same topic or theme, arranged by level. The student chooses a high-interest topic and starts at a level below their comfort level. This boosts their reading confidence. As the student moves through levels of text complexity, they are building a ladder to the next book or the next goal. For example, if a student is really interested in baseball, their book ladder would contain books with varying degrees of difficulty on baseball. They would work through all of the books until they reach their “goal book.”
Kinnaman has 50 different book ladders on a variety of topics. Teachers can check out each book ladder set. They only give the student one book at a time. When the student is comfortable reading the book, it goes in their book box and they move on to the next text. This allows the student to revisit that book any time during their book ladder.
The teachers participating in the professional development asked questions about how to start a book ladder library, funding, sources for finding books on certain subjects and how to determine reading levels of texts.
Scribner says book ladders are ideal for struggling readers, reluctant readers or kids who just aren’t motivated to read.
Multiyear Finance Plan
The District is in the process of updating the 2016-2020 Multiyear Finance Plan. The Multiyear Finance Plan is a three to five year plan determining the District’s investments. The District’s Multiyear Finance Plan includes targeted investments aligned to the Strategic Plan and Pillars of Learning. The plan also includes evaluations to monitor and track progress to determine if those investments are paying off. The Multiyear Finance Plan encompasses the annual budget process.
The Plan will be updated each year with consideration of revenue, student enrollment and program effectiveness. It will also include significant input from a broad base of stakeholders.
Superintendent Grotting and the Budget Committee will hold Multiyear Finance Plan Listening & Learning Session on Monday, November 27, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at Highland Park Middle School, 7000 SW Wilson Ave. Beaverton, OR 97008, in the library.
Mountainside High School Dedication Ceremony
Community members joined Mountainside High School students and staff in a Dedication Ceremony on November 1, 2017. Members of the Mountainside High School Planning Team, School Board members and local government representatives were also on hand for the dedication.
The Energy Trust of Oregon presented the Beaverton School District Bond Program a $400,000 check for energy savings relating to design and construction of the new high school.
Volunteer Opportunity – Read-to-Me at Vose Elementary School
Vose Elementary School is seeking volunteers to read with preschool, kindergarten, and first graders as part of the Read-to-Me Program. Read-to-Me focuses on helping the most in need pre-k students reach their "500 books read to them" goal as part of the new reading assessment, and to help them enter kindergarten with a more equal playing field for accessing literacy. The program also helps the lowest performing readers in kindergarten and first grade build their literacy strengths.
The school will host a volunteer orientation for the Read-to-Me Program on Thursday, November 9, 2017 from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Vose Elementary, 11350 SW Denney Rd, Beaverton.
The training will include an informal explanation of the expectations of the Read-to-Me readers, routines, resources, and sign-ups for rotations of students to read with.
