Kent State University Shooting 1970

The Kent State University shootings occurred on May 4, 1970. The Ohio National Guard killed 4 unarmed students and wounded 9. Some of the students shot were involved in the protest of the Vietnam war.

New York Times v U.S. (Pentagon Papers) 1971

The court case New York Times v. U.S made it possible for the New York Times and Washington Post newspapers to publish the classified Pentagon Papers without getting in trouble. The pentagon papers were officially titled "Report of the Office of the Secretary of Defense Vietnam Task Force." The New York Times claimed this was a violation of the 1st amendment.

Watergate Break in 1971

Nixon broke into a Washington D.C building to steal secret documents and wire-tap phones. Historians are not sure if Nixon knew about the Watergate break in before it happened, but he covered it up afterwards which led to his resignation.

Roe v Wade 1973

Roe v Wade legalized abortion but limited it to the third trimester which made this a landmark case. Nixon said he thinks abortion breaks a family but sees it necessary in interracial pregnancies and cases of rape.

Nixon resigns 1974

Richard Nixon resigned from his presidency on August 9, 1974 before he could be impeached as a result of the watergate scandal. Nixon is the only president to have resigned from presidency.
