From the Director of Instruction

February 2016

WUEF National Conference

Last week I sent an email with the WUEF National Teacher Conference Application. Please remember that the deadline is February 29th. This is a great opportunity for our staff and one that I know the WUEF enjoys providing for our teachers.

Please let me know if you need me to send you the information again.

Digital Learning Day is 2/17/16!

Everyday is Digital Learning Day at Wayland Union Schools but each year one day is reserved to acknowledge the importance of utilizing technology to support instruction and showcase classrooms, schools, and districts who are integrating technology into instruction. Please email me your pictures and stories on 2/17/16. Also, if you want to enter your technology integration activity in a contest, you could win an Apple Watch! New Science Standards- Timeline for Implementation and Assessment

As you may be aware, the State of Michigan has adopted new science standards called the Michigan Science Standards. These standards replace Science GLCEs and will begin to be formally assessed in 2020 with field tested items beginning to show up on M-STEP tests beginning next spring (2017).

The K-12 Science Curriculum Committee met this fall and will meet again this spring to review a timeline and plan for implementation of the new science standards.

Expanded Summer Learning Program Offerings

Thanks to some excellent grant opportunities from the State of Michigan, we will be able to offer opportunities for summer learning to more students than we have in the past. The programming will focus on reading and math. Be on the lookout for job postings for summer learning programs coordinator, teachers, and aides. We'll be coordinating with food service and community education to provide free summer meals and other summer programming as well!

M-STEP Information

The State of Michigan has released a video to help parents understand M-STEP scores. If you would like to view the video, please click here. Please feel free to include the link in any classroom newsletters or emails that you send to parents.

We will be forming a group of teachers to attend the MiELA conference again at the end of June. We will also be able to spend some time this summer working with the MAISA units, refining them, and aligning supporting resources to meet our needs. I will be sending additional information out on both opportunities as soon as possible.

PSAT/SAT Information

This fall, our juniors took the PSAT assessment as an indicator of how they might perform on the SAT assessment in the spring. As you are likely aware, the State of Michigan has moved away from using the ACT and has adopted the SAT suite of assessments. This spring, our students in grades 8, 9, and 10 will take the PSAT, our juniors will take the SAT. Using data from the PSAT, we will be able to predict how students might perform on the SAT test. We'll also be able to use the data to provide intervention for students who are falling short of benchmark scores.
