Attend A FAFSA Day!
The process of applying for need-based student financial aid does not have to be complex and confusing. Attend the many FREE programs offered where financial aid professionals will help you navigate the student financial aid process.
- Each family's situation is unique and will be considered individually. The information you submit is treated confidentially. So, when in doubt, apply for financial aid.
- Meeting Priority Filing Deadlines is critically important.
- Do NOT wait to receive an offer of admission to a college/university before you apply for student financial aid. List every college on your financial aid forms to which you have applied/will apply but not been denied admission.
- Submit your FAFSA - Free Application For Federal Student Aid at fafsa.ed.gov - do NOT pay to submit your FAFSA.
- Keep copies of every document you submit to any college or agency.

Apply to College During CFNC's College Application Week!
During the North Carolina Application Week (7:00am on November 14 through 5:00pm on November 18) many North Carolina colleges and universities will waive the application fee for all NC high school seniors. The purpose of this week is to acquaint you with the CFNC.org application tools and to stress the importance of applying to college. In order to participate fully, prior to November 14, you will need to have a My CFNC Account. If you do not have an account, visit cfnc.org to create one. Read more about this opportunity in your Crosby Scholars student portal including viewing the list of colleges that will waive application fees during this week. Any college or university not on this list will be charging the regular application fee; however, for those who qualify they will accept the College Board College Application Fee Waiver during this week. Remember, you can apply to NC colleges through your My CFNC Account.

Don't Fall for the Financial Aid Myths!
"My parents make too much money, so I won't qualify for aid."
There is no income cut-off to qualify for federal student aid. Many factors besides income are taken into account. Your eligibility is determined by a mathematical formula, not by your parents' income alone. Don't forget: when you fill out the FAFSA, you are also automatically applying for funds from your state, and possibly from your school as well. Some schools won't even consider you for scholarships if you don't complete your FAFSA.
"Only students with good grades get financial aid"
Most of the federal student aid programs do not take the student's grades into consideration. High GPA and good grades may help with academic scholarships.
"My ethnicity or age makes me ineligible for federal student aid."
The basic eligibility requirements can be found at StudentAid.gov/eligibility, but ethnicity and age are not part of the requirements.
"I support myself, so I don't have to include parent info on the FAFSA."
It is likely that you are still considered dependent even if you support yourself and pay your own taxes. If you are independent, you won't need to include your parents' information, but if your parents list you as a dependent on their taxes, you DO need to include their information on your FAFSA. You get preview the dependency questions at StudentAid.gov/dependency
This information is from a fact sheet that can be found at StudentAid.gov/resources

Look Who Won A Cultural Awareness Scholarship!
All Crosby Scholars seniors had the opportunity to attend the Piedmont Opera’s performance of Tosca and enter to win a $250 scholarship on October 26 or November 1. We would like to congratulate Brendan Boaz, a senior at Mount Tabor High School and Ashley Middleton, a senior at Parkland High School as the Cultural Awareness Scholarship winners!
Your Social Media May be Under the Magnifying Glass
What do you reveal about yourself through your social media accounts? Do colleges consider any of this information while making admissions decisions? Some do! Think of your social media page as your electronic resume.
· Review Honor Codes at the colleges to which you submit applications
· Remember, colleges admit students to a community
· College proof your social media pages
· Google search yourself
· Don’t be afraid to show your personality, but consider your audience
· Watch posts from friends
