Daily Announcements

Daily announcements are read each day, and broadcast into classrooms at the beginning of first period.

Announcements can also be found on the South East Jr High website.

Inclement Weather Guidelines

The ICCSD inclement weather guideline can be found here:

Administrators will use Blackboard Connect to notify parents of inclement weather decisions via telephone. School closings are also broadcast on local TV and radio stations. Information will be posted on the district website too.

What if we have a delay of school due to weather? The radio and TV will announce how long the delay will be. It will be stated in terms of 1 hour or 2 hours. If it is a one hour delay, then school will start at 9:50 AM; if a 2 hour delay, school will start at 10:50 AM. We will then run an adjusted schedule throughout the rest of the school day. School buses will run late by one or two hours.

Your student should arrive at school one to two hours later than when you would normally have your student arrive. Therefore, if you drive your student to school and drop him or her off at 8:30 AM on a regular school day, doing so at 10:30 AM would be appropriate when there is a two hour delay. The school will have minimal staff available for supervision of students during these delays and we would appreciate students arriving as close to the actual delay start time as possible.

What if we get released early?

The school district will make a decision about early outs and communicate that via Blackboard Connect. Buses will pick up at the new dismissal time. All after school activities are cancelled in the event of an early dismissal. There will not be any after school supervision in the event of an early dismissal and students would need to be picked up or have plans in place within 15 minutes of dismissal.

How do I get weather updates?

Go to the ICCSD tune in to KXIC, KCJJ, KRUI, Q103, KRNA, WMT, KFMW, WSUI, WHO, KHAK, KCCK, KUNI, KCRG-TV, KGAN-TV, KWWL-TV. The radio stations have been very helpful in getting out the word if there is a change. Station managers request that the public refrain from calling in for information.

We will also have an update message on our school website at

Winter Conferences

2nd Trimester Parent Teacher Conferences will be January 22nd! We will have both drop in conference times as well as scheduled times available again. A sign up genius and more detailed information will be coming closer to the date.

2019-2020 Registration

It's hard to believe we need to start thinking about next school year already when it feels like we just started this one! After we return from winter break SEJH counselors and administrators will begin visiting 7th grade classes to discuss registration for 8th grade. High school counselors will be coming in January to visit 8th grade classes to discuss 9th grade registration. We will send more information with specific dates as it gets closer. Please remember if you are an 8th grade family attending on a voluntary transfer and do not intend to attend your home school for high school, a new transfer form will need to be filled out and turned into the ESC. If you need help getting a form, please contact the guidance office. Counselors from both City High and West High will be at SE for 9th grade registration as we have students who will attend both schools.

Midterms are right around the corner on Wednesday January 15th. As we did 1st trimester, we will post midterm report cards in the document vault in PowerSchool. We will not be printing hard copies except upon individual request. You can always check PowerSchool at any time for up-to-date grades for your student!

Traffic Pattern Reminders!

With the colder weather we have more parents choosing to pick up and drop off students. It is imperative that we follow the appropriate traffic rules and guidelines to ensure student safety. We have had several close calls lately with students nearly, or in one case getting hit by cars as they drop off. PLEASE follow the guidelines:

  • Cars are not allowed in the bus lane between 8:30 and 8:50, and again between 3:45pm (2:45 on Thursdays) and 4:15pm.
  • There is NO stopping, parking or dropping off on Bradford Dr. directly in front of the school. This has been the most problematic area for us as parents will stop there to wait for their students. The police department and City of Iowa City has designated this as a no stopping/parking zone to ensure student safety. It is also a problem for buses to try and exit onto Bradford with cars parked there. Please abide by the rules.
  • Parents may use the back parking lot- please ensure there is room for special ed buses to get through, or Mercer to drop off and pick up.

Arrival to School

With the colder weather please remember that we have no indoor supervision for students until 8:30a.m. If you must drop your student off before that time, please make sure they are dressed appropriately for the weather.

Construction Update

The main entrance is now open again! We are so excited to have all administrative offices moved back into the central part of the building. The main office and administrative offices are located directly inside of the main entrance. The guidance offices, student and family advocate offices and health office are now located directly across the hall from the main office.

They are beginning demolition work on the old library to convert it into classroom spaces ready for the 2020-2021 school year. Our project is moving along nicely and we are so excited at the progress! Please make sure to come and check it out!

Share Your School Day

You are invited to attend our 24th annual Share Your School Day on Thursday, February 6th! Designed to give our SE parents or guardians over age 21 the opportunity to experience a day in the life of their SE student, Feb. 6th will begin with students and guests signing in at the table in the main foyer before 8:50 AM and heading to 1st period. This will be a normal day of instruction for our students.

You are welcome to come to SE for whatever part of the school day you can manage. You do not have to stay for the entire day, but whatever works in your schedule. You are welcome to stay for lunch, however please know that our lunchroom is crowded so we will be very cozy in there:) If you would like to purchase school lunch, you will need cash as you go through the line. You are welcome to bring in your own lunch, or leave for lunch and come back for afternoon classes. Please also know that parking will be limited so you may need to park at Mercer and walk over.

If you arrive after 8:50 AM, Door #1 (the main doors in the front) is the only access door. After you arrive please sign in at the front desk in the main office and we will help you find your student's class.

Guest are welcome to observe or participate in classes as they get a small glimpse into what student learning looks like each day at South East. Due to space constraints, we ask that only adult guests join us for the day as we do not have space for younger siblings and friends. We would like to protect the instructional day as much as possible. Thank you for understanding!

We hope you can join your SE student for this wonderful tradition!

PE Dance Unit

The Physical education department is offering the dance unit this winter. For the second year we will be using You tube as a resource for our free dances. Students will self-select from a variety of dances including: Hip Hop, Tap, Indigenous, Latin, Step, Modern Line , and Ballet. Students choose a type of dance and watch the dances. They will choreograph a dance with a sequence of 6 dance movements. Students may do a solo or partner or group dance. When they are ready with their dance with 6 movements, they use Flipgrid to record one to two minute choreographed performance. Teachers view students video Flipgrid and if students desire they can go public with it when we hold our finale viewing called the Digital Dance Showcase. This unit could be the beginning of a social lifetime activity moving to the rhythm of the music. We hope you will encourage your child to work hard and enjoy the dance. Maybe they will even let you see their dance. Go dance Little Hawks.

Polar Bear Club Starting

Polar Bear Club will begin meeting after school now in Mr. Smith's classroom. This is a winter RUNNING club that will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:00 until spring break. Anybody is welcome, not just cross country and/or track and field athletes. The focus of this club is winter fitness. However, it is meant to be more social for the kids and less stressful (more hot cocoa and candy canes and no racing!). Students can join anytime between now and spring break, are welcome to come when they are available and skip when they are busy/tired. Students must come prepared with winter running clothes including a hat and gloves every single day and parents should be aware that we always run off campus, typically toward City High or on the path behind Hy-Vee. Students must also have a current physical turned into the office. Please consider donating hot chocolate and/or candy canes! Contact Andrew Smith @ with any questions.
