Structure of Congress

Congress is made up of two parts, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Also known as bicameral. The Senate consists of 100 senators, 2 from each state. The House of Representatives has 435 members which is based on population in each state.

Legislative Powers

The Constitution specifically grants Congress their most important power, to make laws. The Legislative branch made up of the Senate and House of Representatives is the only branch that can make laws. The Constitution also puts a limit on the power that Congress has, it states that they cannot pass ex post facto laws, bill of attainder laws or suspend the writ of habeas corpus.

Non-Legislative Powers

Non-legislative powers of Congress include, impeachment power, confirmation power, and investigative power. These are given to congress because it consists of the most members therefore a better vote with more opinions.
