Caribou Trails Update
Published by Crawford Elementary December 12, 2021
Peace, Love and Joy
Good evening Crawford families,
With many uncertainties facing us in the new year, this is a good time to take stock of what we have, take time to enjoy those who bring light to our lives, and bring hope, joy, peace and love to others.
In our hallway there has been a recent addition encouraging us to do just that. You will remember that in last week's Caribou Trails Update Mrs. Grant was seen giving students Hope and Joy. Well, the students, in turn, gave Hope, Peace, Joy and Love back to our school community in the form of bulletin boards that ask the simple question: What gives you peace? What gives you joy? What gives you hope? As we celebrate the darkest nights of the year, I hope that you can ponder these questions and bring hope and light to someone else, and in so doing bring lightness and joy to your own life.
The School Board, on December 7, voted for masks to become optional for all staff and students as of January 3, 2022. We thank you all so much for your respect of the school policies this year and for encourage you to make the choice that is best for your child and your family when school resumes in January.
With the organization of the PTO and the assistance of volunteers, Crawford hosted the Penguin Patch Holiday Shop Experience last week. Students were able to buy gifts for family members and help out our PTO at the same time. Students were happy to take part in this festive event.
We are excited to be celebrating musically with our Winter Band and Orchestra Concert on December 14. Please come and watch as our musicians perform in this culminating activity of the first semester. Mrs. Brazier has been wonderful with these students and they have made great progress!
Remember, the last three days of the semester are all early outs, with students dismissed at 12:40, as well as Spirit Days where all will dress to show their holiday spirit (see below for themes). This should give us all plenty of time to enjoy the holidays and get in the spirit of the season.
As we wind up the semester and turn toward the upcoming year and gaining daylight each day, we hope that you enjoy the holiday season.
Have a wonderful Sunday evening and a great week!

School Efficiency Task Force Information
As you may know, each of the four options on the School Efficiency Task Force Report suggested closing Anderson Elementary School and consolidating those K-2 students into Crawford, making it a K-5 school with 6th grade at Ben Eielson Junior/Senior High School.
I am including below a message that was sent out by Anderson Elementary Principal, Stacey Stansell. This message includes important information about the School Efficiency Task Force report to the school board, timeline and links to additional information. You may also have seen articles in the Newsminer about the proposed school closures. You may provide feedback through the FNSBSD survey here. Survey feedback is accepted through January 2, 2022.
"Anderson Parents,
Communication was recently sent out by the school district regarding the potential closing of Anderson Elementary, the shifting of Anderson students/staff to the Crawford building (K-5), and the 6th grade students shifting to BEJH/BEHS, I wanted to make sure you all had the links to specific reports of information, (see below) as well as the important upcoming dates to join in the process of public comments, if you're so inclined.
Any public comments can be made to schoolboard@k12northstar.org
On Monday, December 6, the school efficiency task force recommendations report will be presented to the Board of Education in a work session. The agenda and the task force recommendations are now available. The work session is open to the public and can be attended in-person or by watching online through zoom (link in agenda) or the district’s Facebook page. Work sessions are informational meetings, there is no public testimony and the Board will not vote on any agenda items at this time.
Here is the current timeline of events, including opportunities for feedback:
- December 7, 2021 - Feedback form opens (here) nand will be available for staff and families online and on paper
- January 2, 2022 - Feedback form will close, but comments can be sent in via email to the Board
