ONPOINT PARENT
OCTOBER 2019
IT'S FALL Y'ALL!
I must admit this is my favorite time of the year. I love the change of the seasons and even the fact that the temperature is getting cooler. I really enjoy the holidays and try to make the most out of every month-October thru December. There are many cool (pun intended) activities coming up. I hope that you will be able to take advantage of some.

It's LD Awareness Month!
If you are a parent or teacher of a child with a learning disability – or have learning disabilities yourself – you are not alone.
The good news is that the Learning Disabilities Association of America is here to help! Since 1963, LDA has provided support to people with learning disabilities, their parents, teachers and other professionals with cutting edge information on learning disabilities, practical solutions, and a comprehensive network of resources. Connecting the Dots: Community & Educational Resources for Youth & Adolescents
The Explosive Child-January 10, 2020
Although this training is next year, it fills up fast. Adapted from Dr. Ross W. Greene’s book, The Explosive Child, this workshop tackles challenges in dealing with chronically inflexible and easily frustrated students. Participants will gain a knowledge of possible triggers and causes for students’ difficult behavior, and how to better manage the classroom when challenging students act out. This workshop will challenge participants to see things from a different view, and better understand the root causes behind the students’ behavior in an effort to work together collaboratively with both students and parents to find meaningful and lasting solutions for everyone involved. Sensory Friendly Community Activities
Sensory Friendly Films
AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where we turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so you can get up, dance, walk, shout or sing! Our Sensory Friendly Film program is available on the second and fourth Saturday (family-friendly) and Tuesday evenings (mature audiences) of every month. Please check your local theatre listings for specific showtimes.
It's a Sensory World! Boo Bash!
Boo Bash is an annual Halloween Carnival that is open to the entire community by It's a Sensory World! This event offers families a way to practice the concept of trick-or-treating in a sensory and communication-friendly environment. They provide non-edible and edible treats keeping in mind that some of the participants may have mild to severe food allergies.
This event also features carnival games, a costume dance, bounce houses, concessions and our ever popular Boo Bus!
Wylie Acting Group-Sensory Shows
In 2010, a community group with a strong desire to create, promote, and support theatre arts opportunities for the children of Wylie met together and founded Wylie Acting Group for Children. Spearheaded by Del Thatcher, their purpose was to found a nonprofit children’s community theatre group. That first year, it was a kind of magic to watch volunteers work in partnership to make community theatre happen for the children of Wylie.
