It is hard to believe that it is almost May! We have been keeping very busy with lots of exciting activities here at Green!

Our 7th and 8th grade students had the opportunity to participate in workshops facilitated by the Pass it Along organization. These workshops focused on community building, volunteering, and creating a school culture of kindness.

I continue to visit classes regularly to share lessons on a number of important topics! Grades K - 5 have been focusing on problem-solving, empathy, and friendship, while middle school students have been focusing on positive self-talk and self-esteem.

A number of students have also been meeting with me in small group settings. Recently, we have had groups focused on problem-solving, friendship-building, and easing worries.

Our 7th and 8th grade Peer to Peer group was excited to facilitate two outreaches for our 2nd and 4th grade students focused on respect and personal property!

Pass it Along Workshops

Green Hills School has been partnering with Pass it Along for a number of years in order to bring important programs and workshops to our 8th grade students. This year, we were thrilled to be able to work with Pass it Along to implement a program for our 7th grade students as well.

Our 8th grade students participated in the Discover Your Passion and Purpose workshop. This program is designed to "build self-esteem and self-acceptance and promotes compassion and altruism." With a focus on gratitude, students were encouraged to concentrate on the people and things that mean the most to them, and then to think of ways that they can give back in their community.

7th grade students were able to join Pass it Along for a two day program focused on community-building, self-discovery, and creating a school culture of kindness. The workshop included hands-on, movement-based learning activities and encouraged students to focus on the positive qualities of those around them.

We were very lucky to be able to welcome Pass it Along back in person this year!

Peer to Peer Outreach

In March and April, our 7th and 8th grade Peer to Peer students facilitated an outreach for our 2nd and 4th grade students focused on respect and personal property. The younger students had the chance to rotate through stations where they played games, performed skits, and made their way through an obstacle course. The 7th and 8th grade students planned and built the stations, and the younger students were fantastic participants.

Test Anxiety Tips

It is understandable for students to get nervous when taking an important test, or when turning in a crucial assignment. Sometimes, that feeling can actually push them to focus and work their hardest! But, when the feelings become overwhelming and distracting, the student may be suffering from test anxiety. Negative Self-Talk

We have been noticing an increase in negative self-talk amongst the students, particularly those in middle school. I have been visiting classes to discuss the importance of treating ourselves with the same patience and kindness with which we treat those around us. It is crucial that students understand that we speak to ourselves more than we speak to anyone else, and the way in which we speak can have a profound impact on our mood and behavior. How Right Now Website

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have launched a website focused on mental health support. The site provides a number of resources for coping with overwhelming emotions. It also offers tips on how to talk to loved ones who may be struggling with their own mental health. Click here to visit the How Right Now page.

Mindful Minutes

One practice that can help decrease and manage overwhelming feelings when they arise is mindfulness. Mindfulness helps to bring our focus to the present moment to observe our thoughts without judgment. The practice can also help to minimize negative thoughts that can spiral out of control. I have created a playlist of short mindful minute exercises for students to listen to when they feel the need to reset their thoughts or emotions. Click here to view the playlist.
