JANUARY 2023
World Read Aloud Week
World Read Aloud Week is always an exciting time at Reynolds School. This year we will participate in One School, One Book starting on January 30th. This is a very exciting time to come together as a school community around reading.
The book title is always a surprise! We will reveal the book at the start of the week. Throughout the week, the children will enjoy a variety of special activities. We will talk about the book in our classrooms, host an assembly called, "The Magic of Reading", welcome mystery readers, enjoy themed activities around the book and raffle off some fun prizes at the end of the week for those that participate in our optional activity.
We value reading at Reynolds School and hope that this week will inspire our children and strengthen their love of literature. A special thank you to our Co-Chairs Mrs. Cucci and Ms. Titunick and the entire committee. We are so lucky to have such a special group of teachers that went above and beyond to plan an exciting and motivational week for our school community!
Theatre Week
We look forward to this new opportunity! We will be cheering on our Reynolds Rockets this month! We hope they have a great experience!
Kindergarten Registration
We look forward to beginning our journey with you for the 2023-2024 school year. Following Kindergarten registration, we plan to have additional orientation and screening events in the spring.
Winter Clothing Drive
Thank you to everyone who donated winter clothing in December! Our school collected over 800 winter clothing items to donate to those in need! The students enjoyed our theme day reward of a movie, pajama, and stuffed animal day, but even more importantly, they were all excited to be able to help others!
Friends in Guatemala
First and second graders sent a letter and two Rocket amigos to first graders at the Robert Muller LIFE School in Panajachel, Guatemala. The letter arrived in Guatemala at the end of November, and Roberto and Roberta Rocket are currently having an adventure there. They will be making the trip back to New Jersey soon. We can't wait to receive a letter from LIFE School first graders!
Thank you to Senora Cook and several second graders for presenting this project at our December Board of Educaiton Meeting!
Hour of Code
Students in grades K-2 participated in the Hour of Code in December. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, using fun block coding to show that anyone can learn coding basics. Kindergartners and First graders learned Code Monkey and Second graders learned the Minecraft Coding Adventurer on Code.org's website.
Putting it All Together
Throughout the year, teachers work collaboratively across the content areas to help students extend concepts they have learned and make connections. Earlier in the year, second graders learned about the properties of solids during Science. They then used this knowledge to construct towers in the STEM Lab during Enrichment lessons. During the month of December, this lesson extended to Art class, where the students learned about how architects design various structures. Mrs. Rockwell taught the students about arches and domes. Then, the students used this knowledge to create a 3-D birdcage! The students had so much fun bringing these ideas to life!
Winter Reminders
Also, please use extreme caution when navigating through the parking lot in the morning and afternoon. Keeping a safe speed and being mindful of others is important to ensure that everyone arrives and leaves campus safely.
Finally, be sure that children are dressed appropriately for the cold weather. Even when the temperatures dip a bit below freezing, children go outside for recess. The fresh air and time to run help to make the afternoons more productive. Hats, gloves, and a warm coat should be standard winter apparel. Please label all items with first and last names.
