April 8, 2016 - Focus Next Week - Problem Solving

From Mr. Backmeyer's Desk

It has not felt like April this week! As we experience Spring in Indiana, please send your child with appropriate clothing for recess. Our inside building temperatures are also reeling from it being warm outside one day and cold the next...layers are probably a good thing for the next few weeks!

We also received our last official quarterly visit from Dr. Quick, our school superintendent, today. Thank you Dr. Quick for your many years of service to the staff and students of BCSC and the community of Columbus! He does not officially get to relax until July 1st. You can see the banner the Southside students signed for him below.

Have a great weekend!

April 19 - PTO Benefit Night @ Chicago Pizza & Yo Mama

April 20 - April 29 - ISTEP Round #2

April 22 - Southside Talent Show

May 14 - Literacy Festival at Central Middle School

May 25 - Report Cards Go Home/LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Most of our students will test on the mornings of the following days:

April 20, 21, & 22

April 26, 27, 28, & 29

Remember: The ISTEP test is just ONE resource we use to see where your child is academically. We're excited for our kids to show what they know!

Universal Design for Learning - Home Connection

When designing lessons in a UDL framework, teachers seek to provide many ways for students to “show what they know.” Art projects, book reports, spelling practice sheets, math posters and plays are all ways children express their learning on a daily basis at school. We talk about goals and teach strategies to reach those goals.

At home, offering kids a structure for “showing what they know” about their living environment can help them increase independence and take pride in reaching goals. Chore charts are a great way for kids to set a goal and work daily to reach the goal. Click HERE to link to a chart generator to make setting and reaching goals fun.
