Student Success
Gulf of Maine Research Institute

Building Climate and Data Literacy for Maine's Middle Schoolers.
Each year, GMRI hosts nearly 10,000 Maine middle schoolers in its LabVenture program — a hands-on, interactive, authentic investigation of the changing Gulf of Maine ecosystem. Completely free for Maine schools, nearly 70% of the state of Maine's fifth and sixth grade cohort experience LabVenture annually. This month, all of our 5th grade classrooms travelled to Portland for an ecology lab. At the lab, students use authentic tools of science and methods of inquiry to explore many of the same questions about the Gulf of Maine that research scientists at GMRI are addressing.

Maine Outdoor Education Mini Grant Winner!
Weatherbee has been selected to receive one of the Maine Environmental Education Association’s 2022-2023 Mini-Grants for Outdoor Learning in the amount of $1500. To qualify, we had to show how our programming connects young Mainers to their local environment and to get youth outside learning! We are so grateful for the financial support for Mr. Plaisted's physical education program. This allows dynamic integrated units like biking, making Maine maple syrup and apple cider that combine life fitness with science and health. The Mini-Grants for Outdoor Learning Program has given out $350K to over 15,000 students in all 16 counties across the state. This is our second year in a row that we have received a grant.
