Pleasantdale Middle School

December 9, 2018

What a Great Week at the Middle School!

Last week was winter concert week and the students did a phenomenal job! Tuesday, our choirs rocked the north gym while on Thursday, the band and orchestra both showed off what they have been learning this year! Sometimes people ask me what are some signs of a positive school culture. My response? Take a look at how involved the students are beyond the classroom. Our students continue to do an outstanding job in the classroom while growing and developing in so many other ways through their extra-curricular experiences like music. Please continue to encourage your child to get involved whether it is music, the musical, clubs or sports, because over and over again we've seen (and research supports) that students who are involved at their school are more invested and perform better at school.

Winter MAP Testing this Week Tuesday and Wednesday at the Middle School!

This is a reminder that winter MAP testing at the middle school will take place on Tuesday, December 11 and Wednesday, December 12. As such, we will have a different schedule on these days. That schedule can be found beneath this write-up.

Remember, the MAP test is an adaptive test that provides an opportunity for students to demonstrate their progress so far this school year. Please, as with every test your child is given, encourage him/her to do his/her very best so we can attempt to get as accurate a picture as possible about the achievement of your child. We utilize this information as one data point in determining future programming for students.

For more information, please see the letter that was sent home to you via email on November 30.

Big picture

Holiday Sharing at Pleasantdale Middle School

Please consider giving to the holiday sharing project at the middle school. There are gift ideas on bulletin boards in each of the academic hallways. If interested in participating, encourage your child to bring take the request off of the bulletin board, write their name on one of the tabs and leave it in the envelope at the board, and bring home the other ticket with the item on it.

This year, we are expanding our request to include any cash or gift card donations (check can be made out to Pleasantdale Middle School) that will be collected and distributed to local families in need. Donations can be dropped off now until December 14 in the main office.

Let's show our neighbors in need just how generous we can be by supporting the holiday sharing this year!

Rescheduled Parent Education Presentation-The Technology Your Children Are Using-Rescheduled to Thursday, December 13 at 9:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Come to hear and ask about the technology and apps your children are using in this low-key, informative sessions led by Principal Sonntag. We'll discuss apps like Youtube, Snapchat, Instagram, Musically, and much more! In addition, some parental advice from one parent to another will be shared about how best to manage and stay on top of what your children are doing online.

Tiger Tipline

While it is always best to talk directly to a staff member, we understand that sometimes this can be uncomfortable or difficult for students or parents. At Pleasantdale Middle School, we offer the Tiger Tipline as an anonymous tool for reporting unsafe, uncomfortable, or unkind behaviors and situations. We explicitly teach the students that if they ever see something or hear something that makes them feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or is unkind, either online or in person, they should tell a “trusted adult” which could be parents, school personnel, or other adults in their lives. The Tiger Tipline can be accessed here and we will post the link in Schoology and create a shortcut to the link on the student devices for easy access.

Make Up Day Set for Monday, April 22, 2019

Due to the forward thinking of our District 107 Calendar Committee and the approval of our Board of Education, this year's school calendar had built-in to it the date(s) of snow day(s) should they be needed.

With this said, the make up day for the snow day we just had is Monday, April 22, 2019. Please note that this is still a 3-day weekend for students as Friday, April 19, 2019 is a non-attendance day.

Dates for the Year

If you are like me, you want to know the dates for the year as far in advance as possible. As long as you understand that something may change due to unforeseen circumstances, I’d like to provide you access to the dates we’ve planned for the year (many of which are in the paper calendar you received in the mail). To access the middle school calendar dates, please click here.
