Simple Machines

Lever
A lever is a stiff bar that rests on a support called a fulcrum which lifts or moves loads. There are many examples of levers such as a bat, stapler, can openers, hoe, fork, scissors, rake, and clippers. Levers were invented about 260 BC and they were invented by ancient Greek Mathematician Archimedes. A lever is a simple machine.
Pulley
A pulley is a simple machine that uses grooved wheels and a rope raise, lower or move a load. There are many examples of a pulley such as a clothesline pulley, marine pulley, flagpole pulley, rock climber pulleys, oil derrick, and winches. If you add however many pulleys you like the amount of friction in the pulley shafts begins to become a significant source of resistance. A pulley is a simple machine.

Wedge
A wedge is an object with at least one slanting side ending in a sharp edge, which cuts material apart. A wedge consists of old knitting needles, pins, and a back wedge. A wedge can be used to seperate two objects or proportions of an object, lift up an object, or hold up an object in place. A wedge is a simple machine.

Wheel and axle
A wheel with a rod, called an axle, through its center lifts or moves loads. A wheel and axle consists of windmills, roller skates, record players, wagons, and fans. A wheel and axle is used for raising weights or water buckets from wells. Its principle of operation is demonstrated by the large and small gears attached to the same shaft. A wheel and axle is a simple machine.

A pencil sharpener is a wheel and axle.

Inclined Plane
An inclined plane is a flat supporting surface tilted at an angle, with one end higher than the other, used as an aid for raising or lowering a load. An incline plane consists of roller coasters, ladders, dump trucks, bat tubs, and stairs. Inclined planes help reduce the force necessary to move an object by increasing the distance it must be moved. An inclined planes is a simple machine.

Screw
A screw is a inclined plane wrapped around a pole which holds things together or lifts materials. Screws consist of drills, door locks, and meat grinders. A screw is used for making hidden joints between two pieces of wood. A screw is a simple machine.
