Thank You for Your Help in Supporting the Flint Community!

On Monday, A2 STEAM participated in the Washtenaw County Water Drive to help support the citizens of Flint. A2 STEAM collected over 5,000 bottles of water totaling over 850 gallons. Thank you to everyone who donated water for the cause!

I Think (Insert Opinion Here).

This week, we used the book Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late to talk more about opinions and persuasive writing. In the book, Pigeon gives many reasons to support his opinion that he shouldn't have to go to sleep. Students brainstormed reasons that would support the opinion that Pigeon should go to sleep. They also thought about their own opinions, for instance, that they should have more iPad time, or that the school should have a water slide, and thought of reasons and examples to support their opinion.

Upcoming Field Trip!

On Wednesday, February 3, we will be taking a field trip to the University of Michigan Natural Science Museum. We will be gone from about 9:15 to 11:15. The field trip is our introductory event to our next PBL unit, where students will be building an interactive exhibit about a community helper. At the museum, students will focus on observing the different ways to set up a museum exhibit.

A Whole Lot of Math

Students were very busy this week learning new concepts in math. They started out the week by learning about strategies to mentally add and subtract 10 and 100. Then, they used these strategies to help them create and use open number lines to solve addition problems. Open number lines are number lines which only have the numbers you need written on them. Finally, students learned how to use a change diagram to help them solve addition and subtraction problems, especially story problems. Ask your child to show you how to make an open number line for an addition problem. Remind them to keep working on their fact power!

Building Security Reminder:

On February 2nd, our front door will be officially locked at 8:30 am daily. All parents will have to be identified by camera and buzzed in by the main office staff before entering the building. Doors will be unlocked at 2:55 pm each day for parents to children.

Birthday Celebrations

Be sure to contact me in advance if your child has a birthday this month and would like to celebrate with the class. Keep the creative celebration wheels turning as you think of ways to celebrate that don't include food.
