March 2021
6th Grade News
March is here, and at last, the spring time and warm weather that we have been looking for seems within reach. During the month of March our 6th graders will have just as much to look forward to!
In Social Studies, students will be studying the beginning and the spread of Christianity and Islamic religions, then will begin our study of the Middle Ages.
Language Arts classes will be looking at Informational Texts, practicing using text features and identifying text structures. The students will also be writing narrative essays.
Science classes will be learning about environmental concerns and how we can help preserve our planet. This will include discussing the types of pollution and different ways we can reduce the human impact on the planet.
Math classes will be starting to work with both 2 and 3 dimensional shapes finding area, surface area and volume. We will also be celebrating Pi Day the week of March 15th.
Students of the Month for 6th grade are Diego Resendiz and Anna Timmerman! Keep up the great work!
7th Grade News
After winter break, we saw a drop off of grades for some students. It is essential for students to keep up on their work. Please encourage your students to keep up on their work and continue to check their grades on Tyler. We encourage parents/guardians to check the grades and check Google Classroom as well. We appreciate and understand all of the hard work and stress through this tough time on both the students and the parents.
Reminders for students:
-Wear a CLEAN mask to school, and please wear it correctly.
-Check email daily
-Do your attendance daily.
-Check grades daily.
-Read the Stream for each class for important information.
-Charge your Chromebook at night.
End of 3rd Quarter is March 19th.
The Students of the Month for this month are Sofia Hernandez and Nick Michalek. Congratulations to both of you!
8th Grade News
8th Grade Newsletter
Once again, we would like to sing the praises of our 8th grade students. They really are persevering in an interesting time in history. We teachers are so appreciative of our students’ great attitudes and willingness to take on challenges.
Please continue to check Tyler often. This is the best place to stay on top of what is going on academically in the classroom. The students know to check their “To-Do” list and their “Missing Work” list on Google Classroom. Please have them show those lists to you.
To our parents: Thank you for all of your support!
History: After learning about the Jazz Age, the students are now studying The Great Depression with emphasis on Franklin D. Roosevelt. Because of the boom years of the 20s, economic problems were inevitable. The students will learn about the stock market boom and crash, Roosevelt’s New Deal, and life during the Depression.
Language Arts: After a brief introduction to the Civil Rights Movement, the students are now reading The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis. While reading this novel, the students are also preparing for the IAR test (state test) by reviewing and practicing reading strategies and elements of literature.
Instructional Language Arts:
Instructional LA students are finishing up their first novel study, “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne. We will then go back to our “writing bootcamp” and individual reading passages and assessments. After Spring Break we will begin our second novel study, The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963 by Christopher Paul Curtis.
Math: In math class we will be covering equations in two variables. We will be talking about constant rate of change, slope, and direct variations. We will learn how to graph a line on the coordinate plane using the slope and y-intercept and also by using both the x- and y-intercepts. Additionally, we will be writing linear equations and solving systems of equations by both graphing and substitution.
Instructional Math: In Instructional Math, we continue our exploration of pre-algebra skills in Chapter 9, which introduces variables and algebraic expressions As always, we continue to work on our basic math skills through daily practice on Math Minutes, weekly iXL time, and periodic review of real-world problem solving strategies. A reminder: iXL problems that are assigned on Fridays must come from the “starred” (recommended) list since these are skills that support and enhance what we are working on in our lessons.
Science: We are finishing up our unit on chemistry. Students will be taking the chemistry unit test on March 10th and 11th. We will then review the scientific method before moving on to our physics unit.
Students of the Month: The 8th grade Students of the Month are Maya Sommers and Kamden Jungkens. These two students are responsible individuals who take pride in their work. They are a joy to have in class!

Lunch Information
Until the end of the school year, free food is available through the USDA's "Free Meals for Kids" program.
Each morning that your student is in attendance, he/she will be offered a “Grab and Go” bagged breakfast. Each day your student will also be able to order a bagged lunch “Grab and Go” which will be consumed in the cafeteria. If you would like your student to receive school breakfast/lunch on their remote learning day, it will need to be ordered while in person. For example, if your student attends school on an "A" day and you would like them to receive a breakfast/lunch for the next day while they are learning remotely, they will need to order the remote day food while at school the day prior. Your student would then be sent home from school with bagged breakfast and lunch. If your student's last day of in-person learning for the week is Wednesday, they will be able to take home Grab and Go breakfast/lunch for Thursday and Friday. If the last day is Thursday, they can take home breakfast/lunch for Friday and Monday.
If your student is a full remote learner, meals also will be available for weekly pickup. Meals will be distributed on Monday and Thursday between the hours of 8:30 am until 10:00 am. Meals should be picked up in the back of the Middle School, kitchen door #27. Monday you will receive three breakfast and lunch meals; Thursday you will receive two breakfast and lunch meals. All meals will need to be pre-ordered Thursdays by noon for Monday meal pickup and Wednesdays by noon for Thursday meal pickup. To pre-order, call 815-786-8881 or email sandwichschoollunch@gmail.com. Please enter the back of the Middle School through the main parking lot and head north.
