HMS Bearcat Bulletin

March 2018

A Note from Ms. Buschmann

Spring is here. With the (hopefully at some point) warmer weather comes a lot of activity at Hermann Middle School. Spring sports are in full swing, MAP testing is right around the corner, and before we know it, it will be time for the end of the year celebrations. Please note the upcoming events section at the end of this newsletter for important dates and the invitation to our Student Showcase! We look forward to seeing you at the showcase on April 5 to see what we've been up to all year.

MAP Testing at HMS

Once we return from Spring Break, it is just a short time until the beginning of MAP testing. We will test in English Language Arts April 16-20, Math, April 23-27, and 5th-grade and 8th-grade will test in Science April 30- May 4.

While the Grade Level Assessments that we take are only a single snapshot of what a student knows, they are important tools for us as we work to continuously improve our school. We want every student to do his or her best so that snapshot is an accurate one. There are a few things that you can do at home to help support us during testing:

  • Talk to your child about doing his or her best while building confidence that he/she has been taught the skills and knowledge to do well
  • Make sure students get plenty of sleep before testing
  • Eat a good breakfast with protein for the brain to feed on
  • Keep your daily activities as routine as possible
  • Avoid scheduling conflicts with testing such as doctor and dentist appointments

Thank you for your continuous support of your children and our school.

From the Student Council Communication Group

This month at the Hermann Middle School we had a student of the month with the character trait of self-discipline. Alyssa Riley, from 6th grade, performed Perfect by Ed Sheeran. This month Anna Wright from 5th grade, Melanie Rohling from 6th grade, Itera Christian from 7th grade, and Charlotte Ervin from 8th grade all won student of the month. The 7th and 8th-grade volleyball girls won their game on the 27th vs Washington Middle School. The student council had their second meeting on the 28th, and they talked about grit. We are looking forward to Missouri Read-In day on March 9.

Also, the dance was March 2, 2018. The middle and high school choir concert was on March 6, And the band is performing on March 14th. This Friday, the 9th, all the parents of the kids at Hermann Middle, will get to come and have lunch with their children. Also, they will get to see the book fair with the students they can also buy books as well. We also have the girls' volleyball game in St.Clair Thursday, and 7-8 got to go if they earned it.

Student of the Month

Student Council members took over as coordinators and emcees of the Student of the Month Assembly in February. They prepared the lesson on self-discipline and one of most impactful things they included was, "Discipline is just choosing between what you want NOW and what you want MOST." That is a hard-fought lesson for adults, let alone adolescents, but an important one.

The nominees for February:

Front: Katy, Lilia, Alexis, Amelia, Rebecca, Anna, Caiden

Middle: Melanie, Dwayne, Paige, Gavin, Lucas, Jayden, Sheilah, Donna, Sandra, Charlotte, Ryan

Back: Drake, Blaine, Kole, Brody, Andrew, Allyson, Lance, Shelby, Iteara, Parker

School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (SW-PBIS or PBIS)

The PBIS Leadership Committee at school worked very hard this year to develop a system for behavior support that will embrace being positive and proactive. This system was presented to HMS faculty on our March professional development day and will continue to be tweaked and perfected throughout the spring and summer. Next fall, we will roll out PBIS with students during a 2-day "PBIS boot camp" where we will focus on building relationships and establishing high expectations for students.

Hermann Middle School Student Showcase

Pictures from around HMS

The 7th and 8th-grade volleyball teams had great seasons this year. 7th-Grade went 13-1 with 1st place at the Washington Tournament and 8th-Grade was undefeated with a first-place finish at the Owensville Tournament. Amelia enjoyed her day as the Principal for the Day, maybe a little tooooo much; the band and choir spring concerts were a success- they will each perform again in May; students and teachers battled it out at the student of the month assembly; and we had quite an assortment of costumes for the "silliest day" in February.

Missouri Read In Day

The state of Missouri celebrates Read In Day the second Friday of March each year in order to signify the importance of reading. Reading is a foundational skill, meaning it is necessary for many others. Building good readers and kids that love reading is a passion for the staff at HMS and we love celebrating this day. You can see pictures below of community leaders joining our classes to talk about books and how they use reading in their lives, high school leaders playing Bring Your Own Book with HMS classes, students enjoying lunch and reading with a loved one, and students voting for their favorite costumed teacher.
