News from Carl Sandburg Junior High
August 1, 2023
A Note from Mrs. Johansen
Dear Sandburg Families,
I hope you have had a wonderful summer. This newsletter is PACKED with lots of information to help you and your child get ready for another wonderful school year.
At Sandburg, this summer has been very busy! The Moving D15 Forward plan for Sandburg has included updating our building facility. New flooring, LED lighting in the gym and cafeteria, and a new security system are just some of the updates we've had this summer. We are also very excited about the track renovation!
As you know, students will have access to their schedules using the Infinite Campus Student Portal on August 7th after 4:00 PM. Students can use their Chromebook login information to gain access and view their schedule. Please help us remind students to have their Chromebook charged and ready for learning each day, and to regularly check emails for daily updates and news a few days prior to school, and thereafter.
The process of scheduling a junior high school of 500 students is complex. We appreciate the trust you have given us in using our best professional judgment in placing students. Please know that we work to place each student in the best schedule possible. Every consideration is made to best accommodate each student’s needs. Unfortunately, it is impossible to honor requests. As such, we will not be able to change schedules if students did not receive their electives of choice. Doing so would create unbalanced classes and upset the instructional environment for all. Thank you for understanding!
Our Walk Your Schedule event will be held on Monday, August 14th from 12-12:45 pm. Sandburg staff will be available to meet you and your child as they walk through their schedules. Students will not have access to their lockers until the first day of school, so no need to bring their supplies.
We will host a more informal opportunity to walk your child's schedule on Monday, August 14th from 4-5. Sandburg staff will not be in the building at this time. Mr. West and I will be available to meet students and parents.
If you feel like your child might benefit from another more private opportunity to come to the building due to a special circumstance, please send me an email at johansee@ccsd15.net . We will arrange for another opportunity.
School supply lists can be located at this SITE. We recommend that students just come to school on Day #1 with their Chromebook, notebook, and a writing utensil. We'll help them get acclimated and help them prepare for what they will need moving forward.
Here is a link to the Sandburg Bell Schedule as a reference. Students will use this bell schedule and their own schedule to move through their classes each day. Teachers will be taking attendance for classes at the beginning of the school day, and for each class period.
Our school staff contact list is updated and available on the D15 website. Feel free to print it and keep it handy in the case you need to get in touch with any of our staff throughout the year.
You can anticipate that you will receive newsletters from me at least once a month to keep you informed about school events and important reminders. This is in addition to our social media sites that will have more frequent posts. You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @CSJHWildcats
Have a great week!

A Message from Mr. West, Sandburg Assistant Principal
Hello Wildcat Family,
I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself so that we can build a partnership to best support your child. I am excited to join the Carl Sandburg team and come to Rolling Meadows after 20 years in education. My most recent experience was in Calumet City at Lincoln Elementary school where I served the 750 students in grades PreK-8. Prior to my time in South Cook County, I was at the high school level in various roles helping students prepare for their post-secondary adventures. My goal at Carl Sandburg is to help our students prepare for their high school experience and find success. Personally, I live in Lombard in a blended family with six total kids and two dogs. It is always an adventure and a lot of fun at our house.
Part of my responsibilities at Carl Sandburg will be to supervise and make sure that 504 plans are implemented. This is exciting for me because I am a strong believer in making sure students have what they need to be successful in school. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s plan, please feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to discuss them with you.
I look forward to meeting you and especially our students over the next few weeks. I am so very excited to be a Wildcat. Have a great rest of the summer and we will see you soon.
Sincerely,
Mr. Adam West

Breakfast/Lunch Programs
Carl Sandburg is eligible to participate in the National School Breakfast and School Lunch Programs called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP).
What does this mean?
All enrolled students will receive a free breakfast and lunch at school at no charge to your household. Your child(ren) will be able to participate without having to pay a fee, but we ask that you still complete the Fee Waiver form here to determine if your family qualifies for other financial assistance such as school fees, athletic, and activity fee waivers. Again, completing the application is still necessary for other programs and assists with funding for educational programs in District 15.
If you have any questions about this communication or anything as it relates to Nutrition Services, please visit our website or contact Nutrition Services at (847) 963-3929. We are here to help ensure our students get the nutrition they need so they are able to focus on learning.
Breakfast Procedures
If students would like to each breakfast at school, they come in the building when they get to school and go directly to the cafeteria. We will have supervisors there to make sure students are safely eating their breakfast in the cafeteria.
Lunch Procedures
For the first quarter, all students will sit with their first period classes for lunch. We will have tables reserved for each class. After first quarter, students will be able to choose their seating arrangements in the cafeteria.
A note from the Sandburg PTSA
Monday, August 14th at 6 pm: Join us for the first PTSA meeting of the school year in the library! PTSA is a great way to meet other parents and stay up to date on events like Back to School Blast, Fall Festival, Winter Warm Up, WOW Career Day, Teacher Appreciation Week, and Eighth Grade Celebration.
Whether or not you are able to attend, please consider joining the CSJH PTSA. Joining the PTSA at the White, Red, or Wildcat Sponsor levels provides a direct donation to the CSJH PTSA, and will reduce the amount of fundraising required throughout the year. All members receive access to the PTSA MemberHub site and directory. You are not obligated to volunteer or attend monthly meetings by joining the PTSA. You are simply supporting your child’s school and CSJH PTSA.
Click here to sign up! And if you are interested in being a part of one of our planning committees, please email sandburgptsa@gmail.com.
A note from the Sandburg Health Office
Hello!
Here is a friendly reminder about Health office requirements as we start the school year.
- Annual health examinations are required for interscholastic sports participation. Physical exams are required- before trying out- for participation in an interscholastic sport. The exam form, completed and signed by a doctor, must be dated within 13 months prior to the start of practice or tryouts, and on file in the school nurse's office. Physical forms are available in the school office, online, and here: Certificate of Child Health Examination.
- All students new to District 15 will require a current physical exam with all immunizations up to date (Certificate of Child Health Examination), and students new to the State of Illinois will require an eye examination. This form is available in the school office, online, and here: State of Illinois Eye Examination Report.
- All students must provide proof of immunizations by October 15, 2022, or the student will be excluded from school. The list of current immunizations can be found on the district website here: IDPH Health Requirements.
- Students with health conditions such as asthma, epilepsy/seizures, severe allergies, and diabetes require the emergency action plan completed by their physician along with the Medication Administration Forms, signed by the physician and parent, for any medications required at school. Please bring all forms and medications on or before the first day of school.
If you have any questions regarding the above requirements, you may reach me at annerink@ccsd15.net. I will be back in the office next week to answer any phone calls.
Stay safe and we will see you soon!
