Junior Achievement of Eastern North Carolina Launches STEM Initiative
Cary Based LORD Corporation Sponsors Program to Increase Interest in STEM Careers
Raleigh – Junior Achievement of Eastern North Carolina and LORD Corporation, a global diversified technology and manufacturing company, are partnering together to bring more hands-on STEM activities to the classroom. JA will launch its first ever STEM Summit at Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy on Friday, October 19th, where every student at the school will participate in a day-long series of STEM activities.
“Engaging young people in STEM is critical to preparing the next generation of our workforce,” said Ed Auslander, President and CEO, LORD Corporation. “JA and LORD have a longtime partnership and we look forward to working with them to meet their goal of preparing young people to succeed in a global economy.”
LORD Corporation customized curriculum that features fun and engaging ways to learn about science, technology, engineering and math. More than 70 LORD volunteers will run work stations where students experience everything from concepts of polymer chemistry to circuit design to the physics of fluid dynamic airflow. They will also hear from female LORD employees currently in STEM careers. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, women remain underrepresented in STEM jobs and among STEM degree holders with only 24% of women pursuing STEM careers.
“We are excited to do our first ever STEM Summit with the Women’s Leadership Academy to help ignite STEM passion in young girls,” says JA President Bebee Bason Lee. “By hearing from professional women in STEM fields, we are reinforcing the message that girls can be successful in a STEM career.”
JA hopes to deliver the curriculum to school partners across Eastern North Carolina.
