India Achieves Freedom from Britain

After 200 hundred years of British rule India gained independence. But there were problems. The Congress Party for India was mainly made up of Hindu's. So the Muslims made the Muslim League. Who was led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. They said that they weren't going to be led by Hindu's. So India was separated into Muslim and Hindu nations in 1947. This was called Partition. They left India for Hindu's, and Pakistan for Muslim's.

War breaks out.

War between religions

10 million people were relocated because of the Partition in the summer of 1947. When this relocation happened violence erupted. Gandhi was able to stop the violence between the two religions. But peace didn't last long. In 1948 Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu extremist. Fighting is still continues today.


Kashmir is a small region between India and Pakistan. this area had a Hindu leader, but Muslim's mostly occupies Kashmir. Fighting continued in this area until UN arranged a cease-fire in 1949. This area is considered to be at high risk of a nuclear war to break

Jawaharlal Nehru was India's first prime minister, who served 17 years. He was able to keep India neutral during the Cold war. Jawaharlal tried to improve the standard of living in India.

The next prime minister

In 1966 Indira Gandhi, who was Nehru's daughter, became the next prime minister. In the 1980s she was assassinated by Sikh bodyguards. The Sikh bodyguards wanted their own nation and was an ethnic group.
