Lake Elementary School News

Weekly Update for January 24th

Dear Parents,

We had quite a week last week! Most of our classrooms received notices of Covid-19 exposures, and we had about 24 reported in-school cases. Our school was not the only one hit hard, and you can check the VUSD Case Dashboard for more information.

Even with all the chaos that this week brought, our teachers and students continued marching forward with teaching and learning. It was wonderful to drop into classrooms this week and see students engaged in small group academic support, character lessons, collaborative group work, and science explorations.

Next week, I am excited to announce that Lake will be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge! Please look below for more information on fun spirit days that we have this coming week. Remember to always be kind and teach your children how a simple act of kindness, such as a smile or holding a door open can make someone's day.

Thank you for your partnership in your child's learning.

Interim Principal

The Great Kindness Challenge Spirit Week

Starting on Monday, we will be participating in the Great Kindness Challenge Spirit Week. You should have gotten yellow flyers that went home with your students for ideas on how the can show kindness to others. When students finish their checklist (and for grades 2-5, fill out the reflection on the back), have them bring them to the office for a drawing.

We encourage you to participate in our theme days:

Monday: Tie Dye

Tuesday: Sports Team

Wednesday: Crazy Clothes and Hair

Thursday: Wear Your Class Color (ask your child on Monday what color their class chose!)

"I have a dream..." in TK

We wanted to share with you a glimpse of some of the learning in Transitional Kindergarten last week. We thought it would be appropriate to share some of their dreams. Living in the world they're describing sounds pretty great!

In Case You Missed It...

Instructional Minutes Change beginning on January 11, 2022

Due to the recent agreement between VUSD and VTA to use two of the 182 instructional days as professional development days, the district and union have agreed to add lost instructional minutes needed to meet the state's minimum requirements to the remaining school days for the 2021-2022 school year. The changes will affect all elementary schools with TK-5 classrooms.

Three additional minutes will be added to the end of each school day beginning January 11, 2022. This will provide the district with the needed minutes to meet all required minimum minutes for all elementary grade spans.

Covid Testing is now available, on campus, weekly, for all staff and PTA parent volunteers who are not vaccinated or who wish to have asymptomatic testing. Please stop by the front office from 10-11:30am on any Tuesday if you are a PTA volunteer and would like to take advantage of our testing, provided by Inspire Diagnostics.

After October 15th, all staff and volunteers will need to be vaccinated against covid-19 or complete weekly testing, per state guidelines.

  • Monday is a minimum day! Dismissal is at 12:36pm. There is no second-chance breakfast on minimum days, so please send your child with a snack, or have them get breakfast before school starts from 7:25-7:40.
  • No Dogs on campus. As much as we love our furry friends, we can not have them on campus. This is VUSD policy, so if you need to bring your dog, you'll have to pick your child up at Lake Park. Thank you!
  • Early pickup: If you need to pick your child up early for an appointment, please do so prior to 1:30pm. After that you'll need to wait until regular dismissal time. If you have questions, please call the office.
  • Do not drop your child off prior to 7:25am. We have no supervision available before this time. Students need to stay in the car until 7:25 if you are in the line.
  • Please have your child bring a water bottle and mask, daily. Donations are needed for small water cups for those students who forgot their water bottle. Small, disposable children's mask donations are also greatly appreciated! You can send these to the office.
