Specials Curriculum Update
For the close of the school year, the students concentrated on drawing and painting studies of the emerging spring blossoms and of melon slices. The Rustin through Penn Classes created self-portraits in profile. The Fox Class collage project began with a magazine cutout of a face or head. They completed a large painting propelled by designing hair for that face or head.
The Middle School students re-purposed large canvas photographs, using them as a jumping off point to tell a story. The middle school clay projects included vessels that had faces and sushi trays. The 7th and 8th grade students made a visit to Sines 5 and 10 store in Quakertown where they set up all over the shop and lunch counter to do complex drawing studies .
Library/Information and Technology Literacy
Mott & Hicks – Preschool
Students in the Mott and Hicks Classes have been engaged in an author study of Kevin Henkes. He is the Caldecott Medal winning author-illustrator of Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, Kitten’s First Full Moon, and Waiting. We read many of his books, drew connections between many of his books, and watched videos to learn how he illustrates some of his famous characters. We continued to practice checking out books in the library.
Rustin - Kindergarten
The Rustin Class studied the author Leo Lionni. He is the award-winning author-illustrator of Swimmy, A Color of his Own, Frederick, and Theodore and the Talking Mushroom. We read several of his books and learned about why he likes to use animals as his main characters. In addition, we watched how he illustrates the characters in his books.
Penn – 1st and 2nd
This month, the Penn Class engaged in an author study of Tomie dePaola. He is the award-winning author-illustrator of Strega Nona, Strega Nona Meets her Match, Big Anthony, and Tony’s Bread. Students drew similarities between the characters in the books and enjoyed reading about the different ways Big Anthony made mistakes. We learned about his inspirations for his settings and characters for his books.
Fox – 3rd and 4th
The Fox Class has been learning about the author-illustrator Chris Van Allsburg. He is the award-winning author of Jumanji, The Widow’s Broom, Two Bad Ants, and The Wretched Stone. Students enjoyed hearing about magical and whimsical events in his books, and noticed that many of his stories include his dog Fritz. Students also continued to practice their keyboarding skills on learning.com and improve on their coding skills using Dash the robot.
Helman-OsbornIn 5-6 and 7-8 ITL class, students worked on reading and preparing presentations for their second book share book. Students shared their presentations with their classmates. In addition, the 8th grade students shared their year-long independent study projects with their 7-8 peers during ITL class. Students continued to improve on their coding skills using the lessons and activities on code.org.
