The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of May 11 - 15!
Message from the principal
UHS Families, Students, and Staff,
Greetings again J-Hawk Family! We had a great week last week that saw many students, families, and fellow staff members, reaching out to express their sincere appreciation for our teachers and staff for their committed work and service to our UHS students. We have an incredible team of educators who help bring learning to life for so many! Thank you again!!!
Also last week on Tuesday, we had over 300 students and families drive through our UHS parking lot to pick up items that they had either in lockers or from specific classes. It was a well organized process ran by Mr. Goodhue and a host of UHS staff workers. Then on Friday, the chorus and band directors were on hand to collect items from students in the music program (pictures below). Thank you to all who participated!
This coming week we will have our seniors drive through to pick up their cap and gowns as they get ready for graduation. This process will happen on Tuesday, May 12th, from 9:00am-12:00pm. This week also our teachers and staff will be coming to UHS in staggered shifts to clean out their rooms.
That said, we still have learning going on and seniors (and all students) who need to continue to work so that they can finish classes in order to stay on track for graduation. In these last weeks, it is critical to stay engaged in the work and learning happening. Those students who need to get work caught up from before March 12th need be sure they are turning that in as soon as possible if they haven't already.
Progress has continued in full-force on our new UHS Fitness Center as well as stadium (new turn). It's exciting to see these projects come together. Updated pictures from www.j-hawks.com Twitter are provided below.
Since more questions have come through, I thought I would use a question and answer format again this week to highlight important questions I've been asked. I've started with locker clean out items and graduation details as well as teacher check-in's. I also left in questions and responses from last week.
What if I missed my locker item pickup time last week?
On Monday, May 11th, Mr. Goodhue will be reaching out to students and families of students who did not pick up items to let them know when and how to pick up their locker or class items later this week. As we shared last week, any school textbooks or library books found in lockers will be kept at school.
When do I drop off my textbooks or other library books?
Seniors will be dropping off items this week when they pick up their cap and gown. However, our 9th, 10th, and 11th, graders will be turning their books in at a later time. We will send out out those details later in the week.
When do I submit my request for whether or not I do a Pass/No Mark or taking a grade for my classes?
If you haven't submitted your request to choose your classes to be for Pass/No Mark or regular grades, please go to Dr. Carlile's email to all UHS families on April 21st regarding grades and credits that I have linked here. You will find a link to submit your choice on this document that I linked above.
Responses from seniors are due May 15th.
Responses from freshmen, sophomores, and juniors, are due May 22nd.
What do I do if I already submitted my response for Pass/No Mark or grade my classes but need to change it now?
If you have already submitted your response but now need to change it, please send an email to Dr. Carlile at carlilec@urbandaleschools.com with your student's name and grade level. She will send you directions on how to change your request.
When will the in-person graduation ceremony happen?
Our in-person graduation this summer will be held on Saturday, July 25th. We have emailed our seniors and their families with details about these events both on April 30th and again on May 8th. If a senior or family members of a senior did not receive these emails, please contact me at carvert@urbandaleschools.com.
Questions and responses from last week's newsletter:
How will I get things from my locker at school? We had less than 400 lockers with items in them. Since most students did not have anything in their lockers, we will only notifying those who had items in their locker when we cleaned them out and inviting just those students to come to the school. We will send a separate email on Monday, May 4th, to those students and families who need to come to the school on Wednesday between 2:00pm and 6:00pm to pick up their items that have been boxed up by UHS staff. As we shared last week, any school textbooks or library books found in lockers will be kept at school.
Will we be having a graduation and honors ceremony for the UHS Class of 2020?
Yes, we are planning to have our graduation ceremony for the UHS Class of 2020 in person this summer in June or July (date and location yet to be determined) as well as having in a virtual ceremony on May 27th at 7:00pm (this is the date and time of our originally planned graduation ceremony) via the internet. We will provide the link to this event later.
We will host an honor ceremony (for those students earning scholarships and awards) on May 26th at 7:00pm and play it on the internet. We will provide the link to this event later.
Our in-person graduation this summer will be held on Saturday, July 25th. We have emailed our seniors and their families with details about these events both on April 30th and again on May 8th. If a senior or family members of a senior did not receive these emails, please contact me at carvert@urbandaleschools.com.
Will the virtual ceremony highlight and recognize individual seniors?
Yes, we plan to have as many of the components of our in-person ceremony as possible including have each senior's picture with their cap and gown (those who choose to participate) and name. The virtual ceremony will also include the Pledge of Allegiance, welcome and introductions of ceremony participants, a brief recognition of retiring staff members, Academic Recognition Awards (for students who finish their careers with cumulative grade point averages of 3.75 or better), senior graduation speeches, a performance by the vocal music students, and the conferring of diplomas.
What ways are teachers making themselves available to students?
Though teachers have been and will continue to check emails and respond to them, you will see more opportunities this week for virtual check-ins and opportunities to ask questions "in person" via Google Meet or Zoom.
Do I need to decide right now if I want to take the Pass/No Mark option or my grade for my classes? No, there is no rush to submit your choice. Seniors have until Friday, May 15th, and 9th, 10th, and 11th graders have until Friday, May 22nd to decide. Be sure to consult with your teacher if you have questions about it. Please know that teachers are getting many requests from students and families so they may not respond right away but will get back to you.
Remember also to review the document from Dr. Carlile's email to all UHS families on April 21st regarding grades and credits. Click here to view the document.
The link to submit your request can be found in Dr. Carlile's document linked above as well as in the email she sent.
What is my grade for each of my classes based on? As Dr. Carlile shared in the attached document in her email on April 21st, whether a student chooses Pass/No Mark or letter grades, the basis for that mark, "will be based on content delivered from January 21, 2020 - March 12, 2020, the second semester dates students attended school prior to school closure due to COVID-19. Students with a course letter grade of D- or higher will receive a Pass. Students with a course letter grade of F will receive a No Mark. Students may
elect to receive a letter grade in lieu of Pass/No Mark."
Does my new, optional learning count toward my grade in my class? Do I need to continue to keep learning? Though the optional new learning does not count toward a student's mark/grade in the class, it is still important learning that teachers have focused in on as essential for each given course. Teachers are working to provide focused learning, feedback for students, meetings to connect, and activities for engagement.
If students have past work and learning from March 12 or before that is missing or needs to be reassessed, they should be doing that with their teacher. This material can impact their grade.
Will we be taking semester final exams this year? No, we will not be taking semester final exams for our courses this year. Semester final exam scores normally appear in the T2 column.
How do I know my current grade in a class? Where will P, NP, or grade appear? In PowerSchool, students' current grade shows under the S2 column (stands for semester 2). The F2 column (final grade at the end semester) will be the place where you will see the final P for pass, NM fro No Mark, or final letter grade at the end of the semester (based on the student's choice for each class). Beginning on Monday, April 27th, we will be taking out the Q3 column (Quarter 3 grade) and T2 (2nd semester final) out of the Quick Lookup screen on PowerSchool as we will not be having 3rd quarter grades (based on closure) and will not have semester finals.
What do I do with any textbooks or school items that I need to return? Since we are still in active new optional learning until the end of the year, we want student to keep and use those materials they have at home until later in the year. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing our process for students returning those school materials safely.
As a senior, what will happen if I did not complete my CPR requirement yet (was scheduled for April 13)? We learned that the Governor has waived the CPR requirement for graduation for those seniors who did not yet get it completed. They will not be required to make it up.
How will Silver Cord hours for our seniors be impacted by school closure? Hours required to earn a Silver Cord are being reduced for our seniors. Please read the email below in tonight's newsletter from Silver Cord Committee regarding specific details.
When will learning plans for the week go out to students and parents?
Beginning last week and through the end of the year, students and parents will begin receiving emails from each of their teachers between 12:00pm on Friday and 5:00pm on Sunday that focus on more specific learning targets and optional learning opportunities for the upcoming week.
How are teaching adjusting their plans and making adjustments to learning opportunties?
Like other institutions around Iowa and around the country, this is a new endeavor for us as teachers and students. With that, we will have things that go well and other things that need to be adjusted. We will all be learning together in this new approach. We will all have to give each other grace and understanding as we learn and make improvements.
I am reaching out again to connect on a few things. Some that I shared in the last weeks from EFR:
- The well-being of our students and staff: Please know that we have been reaching out and responding to staff and community questions as soon as we can in the best way we can. Families and get meals for students 18 and younger can get Grab'n'Go meals from six different UCSD sites. Free. No id needed. Families can now pick up meals for students (see details below).
- EFR support- During these challenging times (and all times), please know that EFR (Employee and Family Resources) is available as a great personal resource via phone and the web. I've copied information below that I received today. This is free to any UCSD staff, students, or families.

Special message for the UHS Class of 2020!
As we continue think about our students, in particular our seniors, we are finding ways to let them know we are with them and here for them. To that end, Mr. Birdwell put together a few words for our UHS Class of 2020 as well as a few pictures from some members of our UHS staff to honor them. Look for more shout outs and celebrations in the coming weeks.

UPDATE on Silver Cord for the Class of 2020, April 26!
Silver Cord Volunteers:
Let's offer a huge congratulations to the 40 members of the Class of 2020 who have earned their Silver Cords! This is the largest number of seniors graduating with a Silver Cord that we have ever had. You have all done so much good for your community!
As we are learning, sometimes the very best way to help others is to stay home and not inadvertently make someone else sick. Because you cannot be in school, and are being encouraged to practice social distancing for now, it may be difficult for you to find ways to volunteer and meet your Silver Cord requirements.
We have decided to address this issue two ways. First, we have reduced the required hours for the Class of 2020 only, so you can earn a Silver Cord with just 155 hours of volunteer work. Second, we are increasing the flexibility of hours, by allowing you to find ways to volunteer that aren't necessarily connected with a non-profit organization. Some ways people are helping: making cloth masks at home for health facilities, volunteering to babysit (unpaid) for essential workers, working with younger students over Zoom or Skype to help with their schoolwork, helping seniors get technology set up so they can chat with family over Skype or attend a Zoom church worship, working with a teacher to film lessons, and creating greeting cards for seniors who are isolated in nursing homes.
If you have an idea of a way to help others and aren't sure if it will apply to your Silver Cord requirements, please email me here or call or text me at 515-229-7621. I'll work with you and we'll figure it out!

Share Your Urbandale Pride: Yard Signs
Urbandale CSD Families and Staff,
As we consider all of the changes and new routines we’re all adjusting to, the one thing that remains constant is our Urbandale community pride. This is why the Urbandale Education Foundation (UEF) has partnered with Plaza Printers to create yard signs that recognize our remarkable Urbandale High School Class of 2020, our dedicated teachers, and our resilient students. Yard signs will be available to proudly display during Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4 – 8) and beyond!
Purchasing a sign will enable you to not only show your Urbandale spirit, but support the Urbandale Food Pantry and the Urbandale Education Foundation as a portion of every sign purchase will directly support both organizations ($4 will support the Urbandale Food Pantry; $4 will support the UEF). The Urbandale Food Pantry provides food assistance to those in need and the Urbandale Education Foundation provides student scholarships and classroom grants throughout the Urbandale Community School District. The Urbandale Alumni Association and Urbandale Dollars for Scholars are also part of the UEF.
Online ordering is available now through May 14. Signs ordered by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, may be picked up at the UHS parking lot on Sunday, May 3. We’ll follow physical distancing practices at the UHS parking lot by using a drive-thru process where signs will be brought to you in your car (more specifics to follow). Signs ordered between April 29 – May 14, may be picked up at Plaza Printers on May 21 (Note: Plaza has a drive-thru pick-up window for your convenience.). All orders must be placed by May 14.
Join us in honoring and supporting our senior class, our students, and our teachers by proudly displaying yard signs as a heartfelt reminder, just how very much, #WeSupportU!

Two notes from Please Pass the Love regarding supporting student mental health at this time
From April 17th:
We get many requests of mental health providers that are accepting new clients AND using telehealth right now. We put out a call and are excited to share 65 different providers that are anxiously waiting to serve Iowa families.
If you are a school, organization, or business we are asking you to go out of your way to share this list with your families. Often times families may not feel comfortable requesting this information from you, but we know many are desperate to know how to access these resources.
We do not endorse any agency and recognize this is not an exhaustive list.

From late March:
Today YOU have an opportunity to change or save a life you may not even know needs help by sharing this with teens and on your social media. We have to create a movement of opportunity for young people to connect NOW.
The mental health impact of covid-19 will be vast. We have to engage in prevention now. In partnership with dsmHack created a social media platform that had an entire different purpose but was quickly repurposed to be a space of interaction, lifting up, and love for teens by teens.
Please encourage any teens you know to take a peek. It's an app called Slack. We also recognize that there are a lot of kids without access to tech. We have not forgotten them and are brainstorming with other entities how to help. We are all ears for suggestions.
Here's the link for teens only to join and they can live anywhere in the world. This is NOT just an iowa thing bc kids everywhere are hurting:
THIS IS FOR TEENS ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT JOIN AS AN ADULT TO JUST SEE. IT CREATES A LOT MORE WORK FOR OUR STAFF TO HAVE TO DELETE YOU TO PROTECT YOUNG PEOPLE:)
Hurry and connect them! (If you are an adult, please do not join the Slack- we have other programming for you on our website)

AP course updates and information - AP testing starts this week!!
AP testing goes into full swing this week! Best wishes to our UHS students who will be taking these assessments online for the first time in our history of providing these assessments.
A big "Shout out" goes to our AP teachers also for their committed work in getting our students ready to take these tests!
Please find out the latest info regarding AP testing at the following website:
https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/
Exam Dates
Most AP teachers and students we surveyed prefer to test earlier, while the content is still fresh.
•
Exams will be given from May 11–22.
•
Makeup test dates will be available for each subject from June 1–5.
•
Students can take exams at home or in schools, if they reopen.
•
Each subject's exam will be taken on the same day at the same time, worldwide.
•
View the full testing schedule.
We encourage you to remind your students about exam dates for their courses.
Exam Format
Most exams will have one or two free-response questions, and each question will be timed separately. Students will need to write and submit their responses within the allotted time for each question.
•
Students will be able to take exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. They'll be able to type and upload their responses or write responses by hand and submit a photo via their cell phones.
•
For most subjects, the exams will be 45 minutes long, plus an additional 5 minutes for uploading. Students will need to access the online testing system 30 minutes early to get set up.
•
Certain courses—Art and Design: 2D; Art and Design: 3D; Computer Science Principles; Drawing; Research; and Seminar—will use portfolio submissions and will not have a separate online exam. All deadlines for these submissions have been extended to May 26, 2020, 11:59 p.m. ET. Teachers and students may receive separate course-specific communications.
•
Students taking world language and culture exams will complete two spoken tasks consistent with free-response questions 3 and 4 on the current AP Exam. Written responses will not be required. We'll provide additional details in the coming weeks to help students prepare.
Exam Scores and College Credit
As usual, students' work will be scored by our network of college faculty and AP teachers, and will be reported on a 1–5 scale. We anticipate releasing scores as close to the usual July timeframe as possible.
We're confident that the vast majority of higher ed institutions will award college credit as they have in the past. We've spoken with hundreds of institutions across the country that support our solution for this year's AP Exams.
Exam Security
Like many college-level exams, this year's AP Exams will be open book/open note. The exam format and questions are being designed specifically for an at-home administration, so points will not be earned from content that can be found in textbooks or online. However, students taking the exams may not consult with any other individuals during the testing period. We'll take the necessary steps to protect the integrity of each exam administration, as we do every year.
We're confident that the vast majority of AP students will follow the rules for taking the exams. For the small number of students who may try to gain an unfair advantage, we have a comprehensive and strict set of protocols in place to prevent and detect cheating. While some of these practices are confidential to maximize their effectiveness, students and education professionals can learn more about our security measures.
At a minimum, test takers should understand that those attempting to gain an unfair advantage will either be blocked from testing or their AP scores will be canceled, and their high school will be notified as will colleges or other organizations to which the student has already sent any College Board scores (including SAT® scores). And they may be prohibited from taking a future Advanced Placement® Exam as well as the SAT, SAT Subject Tests™, or CLEP® assessments.
Remote Instruction and Practice
On March 25, we began offering free live AP review courses, delivered by AP teachers from across the country. The courses have been viewed more than 3.2 million times since they became available. On-demand lessons are now available for Art and Design, AP Capstone™, and Computer Science Principles.
In addition to sharing information about these classes with students, teachers who are providing remote instruction can use AP Classroom for most subjects. We've now unlocked secure free-response questions in AP Classroom so teachers can digitally assign relevant practice questions students can take at home. Additional tips for helping your students practice are available.

An email from IHSAA and IGHSAU about National Clearning House and COVID-19 - April 10th update
This information came on Friday, April 10th, from the IHSAA/IGHSAU regarding NCAA Clearninghouse:
Update on NCAA Eligibility
The Iowa Department of Education recently received this guidance from the NCAA Eligibility Center regarding eligibility for prospective student-athletes.
The Eligibility Center understands that it will need to adjust its policy on pass/fail grading due to COVID-19. The NCAA will be issuing an adjusted policy on pass/fail grading, given that about half of the nation's high schools will be going to pass/fail grading. The NCAA's intent is to not disadvantage students based on COVID-19. The adjusted policy will be released in 1-2 weeks, and will apply to students in grades 8-12 who receive pass/fail grades in core courses.
The adjusted policy will be available on the Clearinghouse's website (https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/) and will be e-mailed to registered parents, high school administrators, and student athletes.

A letter from the Urbandale Education Foundation regarding summer fundraiser golf tournament--Brad Peyton Memorial
As always, the Urbandale Education Foundation would like to extend a sincere thank you for your support of the Brad Peyton Memorial Golf event. We are grateful for the 200 sponsors, participants, volunteers and dinner guests who came together this past June to honor a family, celebrate a life, and support Urbandale Schools.
Since the tourney began in 2014, we’ve raised over $125,000 in support of scholarships for students and classroom grants for teachers. All of which wouldn’t have been possible without you!
As we begin to plan for our 2020 event, we hope you will again consider supporting the golf tournament. We are recruiting Title, Lead, Lunch, Beverage, and Hole sponsors. Details of all sponsorship levels are listed in the attached PDF; you’re also welcome to sign up online.
You may be in the midst of planning your charitable donations for the coming year. We will plan on following up with you shortly after the first of the year to request your commitment to supporting the upcoming Peyton Memorial Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2020, at Hyperion Field Club.
Thank you for your support and we’re looking forward to another successful event in 2020!
Sincerely,
Marty Trepp

Sign up for Fall sports 2020!
Because our coaches normally meet with students in person to gauge interest and tell students about their program to include summer programming, we are asking that students complete this quick registration for a Fall Sport so that coaches can get in contact with them beginning the week of May 4 to share information.
