Amazing Learning!

This month has been packed with learning. We are all finishing our first partner/group novels and are making choices on how we will show what we know. Look for your student to be making a report, presentation, mock newspaper, A to Z book, or choosing to take a test of his or her knowledge. Choice is critical in making learning authentic to students. Please discuss and support this process with your child. We all know what it is like to make a choice and then having to make a plan to accomplish it. Children need to experience this, but sometimes need help to succeed at it.

American Revolution

Last Friday we completed our exciting geology unit. This week we switch to Virginia Studies and pick up the story of Virginia in the late 1700s. The students will visit Monticello on Thursday to get a feel for life in that era. We will also connect our reading lessons to this study. Our goal is to understand the basic reasons for the colonists wanting independence as well as how Virginians played critical roles in the decision to seek freedom.

Volunteers--Yay!

Mrs. Hoffman and Mrs. Haynes have graciously volunteered to be our room parents. Please keep an eye out for news from them concerning class celebrations and needs. Mrs. Shantler has likewise volunteered to serve as our Art Print parent. Mrs. Nitzsche is our faithful copy person. We are truly thankful for each of these acts of service.

Digital Learning

Teaching digital natives is a daunting task at times, but one at which we are dedicated to excel. The students are busy exploring how to communicate through google docs and presentations as well as choosing reading selections with their RAZ-Kids accounts. The Spelling City, Newsela, and Moby Max accounts are now established and ready to use. Many math classes are using the Khan Academy to provide remediation and practice. We ask parents to explore with the students and find what works for them. Variety of reading and vocabulary options are provided to assist each student in finding the fun in learning. For content review, the students can check out solpass.org.

Mr. Jennings--Full Time Teacher

As part of the student teacher rotation, Mr. Jennings has transitioned into the role of full time teacher. He is developing the lessons with Mrs. Grogan's guidance and then delivering them as the primary teacher.
