Mr. Bennett's Classroom Update

May 4 - May 21

In writing, we nearing the end of our study of the Personal Narrative. Your Third Grader will be finishing up a second narrative they have been working on in class this week. We will then take our last writing assessment of the year. During this assessment your child will be asked to take a personal narrative through the writing process (fill out and organizer, complete a first draft, edit/revise, and complete a second draft). Your Third Grader will have two 40 minute sessions this week to complete this assessment.

After we have finished up our study of the Personal Narrative we will spend a few days next week studying poetry. We will also spend some time over the next few weeks taking a closer look at Idioms.

We will be very busy these next two weeks in reading. This week we will be completing the final week of Unit 6. Due to the Unit Assessment next week we will only be covering new skills this upcoming week, May 4th - 8th. Next week, we will be completing the Unit 6 Assessment.

Here is a breakdown of skills and strategies we will be covering over the next week.

Genre: Narrative Poem

Comprehension Skill: Point of View

Literary Elements: Rhythm and Rhyme

Vocabulary Strategy: Idioms

Grammar: Prepositions

Spelling: Suffixes (-ful, -less, and -ly) - Spelling test Friday, May 8th (This will be our LAST spelling test of the year!)

There will not be a spelling test the week May 11th.

Home Reading Sheets (green sheet) will be due on:

- Friday, May 8th

- Friday, May 15th (This will be the LAST Green Reading Sheet of the year.)

If you are looking for an idea to check your student's reading comprehension at home here is a question you might ask:

- Ask your student to identify the author's point of view (author's feelings) toward a topic they are reading about. Then have your child write down two or three pieces of text evidence to support their answer.

In math, we are just wrapping up our study of decimals. Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a closer look at multiplication and division to prepare your child for some of the skills they will need in Fourth Grade. We will be studying multiplication with multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000, estimation of products, multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number, and multiplying a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number. As we take a closer look at division we will also be looking at how to divide by 10, 100, and 1,000, modeling how to divide with remainders, estimation of quotients, and finding 2-digit quotients.

Unit Studies

In Unit Studies this week, we will be focusing on preparing for our Downtown Walking Tour Field Trip. Your Third Grader has a building or landmark they will be presenting to us on the Field Trip. Last Friday, your child chose which building or landmark they would like to present on the Walking Tour. This week your student will be learning more about the building or landmark they have chosen. Please ask your child which building or landmark they will be learning more about.

Over the last few weeks of school we will continue our study into the history of Lincoln. We will be looking at the first groups of people to settle in our area as well as groups of immigrants who settled here. We will also be looking at how our community as grown over time.
